The biggest concern among economists is that imposing pay increases on employers will reduce the hiring of low-wage workers and raise unemployment. But in four decades of research by economists, this appears to be a small or nonexistent effect.

Harry J. Holzer, professor of public policy at Georgetown University writing in Washington Post

The professor offers this paper. , which says "A sizable majority of the studies surveyed in this monograph give a relatively consistent (although not always statistically significant) indication of negative employment effects of minimum wages."

The source of his information seems to counterdict what Professor Holzer said.

Economics 'experts' share a similarity with weather forecasters. We need only to look out doors at floods of unemployed seeking nonexistent jobs paying a tiny legal minimum. Low pay & high rents benefit only employers and landlords. Stalemate where only an underclass is increasing. No wonder so many don't vote when either way little effectively gain. Drink a cuppa?

I think that economists might agree that they share similarities with meteorologists and likely also plam readers.

But in this case they look not into the crystal ball with a view to know the future. The information is about what has happened.

Extrapolation works on past / old data = "what has happened". It is in the interpretation by fallible humans through which action is mediated with a strong dose of self interest. There is a theory that if incomes were more equal then prosperity would be faster. The Spirit Level authors developed such a theory with many graphs of data that others interpret differently. It may be that any laws can be evaded be it for fare taxation or fare pay. So an unjust / unequal society despite the best of intentions aka "I have a Dream".

13 states will raise the minimum wage in 2014.

Washington state will have the highest state minimum wage in the nation at $9.32 per hour.

SeaTac, WA $15 wage floor for an estimated 6,000 airport workers is currently being challenged in court. I'm not clear on how this qualifies as a minium wage.

Ten states have tied their minimum wages to the inflation index,

California $9 in July $10 by 2016

The federal minimum wage prevails in the 31 states since President George W. Bush signed an increase in 2009.

Arizona: $7.80 to $7.90
Colorado: $7.78 to $8.00
Connecticut: $8.25 to $8.70
Florida: $7.79 to $7.93
Missouri: $7.35 to $7.50
Montana: $7.80 to $7.90
New Jersey: $7.25 to $8.25
New York: $7.25 to $8.00
Ohio: $7.85 to $7.95
Oregon: $8.95 to $9.10
Rhode Island: $7.75 to $8.00
Vermont: $8.60 to $8.73
Washington State: $9.19 to $9.32
Albuquerque, N.M.: $8.50 to $8.60
Bernalillo County, N.M.: $8.00 to $8.50
San Francisco, Calif.: $10.55 to $10.74
San Jose, Calif.: $10.00 to $10.15
SeaTac, Wash.: $9.19 to $15.00

Huffington Post

The World Bank defined the new international poverty line as $1.25 a day for 2005. (Or not, it might be $2.50 a day.)

San Jose, a city near San Francisco in the area often called Silicon Valley, the minimum wage is $10 an hour, the highest in California. (refer to posting #6)

The city had the normal debate about what would happen when San Jose had a minimum wage 11% higher than the surrounding cities. Businesses objected, saying they woule need to raise prices, and that would drive customers to other cities. Or the businesses would layoff workers to reduce overhead by 11%.

The minium wage advocates had a novel argument. They acknowledged that business would need to raise prices, but they argued that the city owed the workers a living wage. They recommened that instead of raising prices, retailers should add a surcharge labeled "living wage" to every bill. That would encourage charity in the hearts of consumers, and the consumers would rejoice in the higher price for the noble cause.

I don't know how San Jose's higher than normal minimum wage effected employment. I expect that it was not higher than normal for long enough to make any difference.

More about Silicon Valley, California

The San Francisco, Okland, Berkeley, San Jose area has a transportation system known as BART.

Thousands of BART workers walked off the job in the midst of deadlocked contract negotiations with management over salary, benefit and safety issues. The commute nightmare that followed became a source of great frustration for many other Bay Area residents trying to get to their own jobs.

Richard White, the CEO of a tech startup in San Francisco called UserVoice complained about the traffic that had been unleashed on his staff.

He said this about the striking BART workers. “My solution would be to pay whatever the hell they want, get them back to work, and then go figure out how to automate all their jobs.”

This is an advertisement for Raytheon, but it also suggests careers, which must pay well above the minimum wage.

Raytheon trains air traffic controllers. It must be a career which requires no post secondary education. My grandfather has a friend who worked in air traffic contol until she went on strike and President Reagan fired her. If I rememeber right, she has no college degrees.

Air traffic controllers use radar equipment. Somebody needs to install and maintain the equipment. I´d guess that is another career that would not require a college degree.

And they are careers available in 50 countries. Is that cool or what?

PS -- a career as a radar technicial might require some knowledge of math, ohms laws, etc.

Hello Jahadista,
Is it unreasonable:
1, for workers to expect to have safety at work with legal enforcement?
2, that net pay be sufficient to cover all the costs of a decent lifestyle?
Or am I totally missing the core of your opinions?

If you don´t mind hurricanes, you might live in Palm Beach, Florida and work at the Port of Palm Beach

Emera, a Canadian energy company wants to ship US compressed natural gas from a Florida port to fuel power generation to the Caribbean.

Emera wants to export as much as 9.125 Bcf/year (big number but relatively small amount) for 20 years (almost a career) from a compression and loading facility it plans to build in the Port of Palm Beach.

Jobs at this location would probably require some kind of STEM educattion.

Merck, a global health care leader with a diversified portfolio of prescription medicines (and if you don't beleive it, just ask them), vaccines and consumer health products, as well as animal health products, wants to hire a Post Doctoral Fellow in Cheminformatics.

Cheminformatics, according to Wikipedia, is the use of computer and informational techniques applied to a range of problems in the field of chemistry.

Merck wants someone with a PhD in Chemistry, Pharmacology, or Computational Biology, which should include knowledge of data-mining, machine learning and statistical modeling techniques.

Data mining is discovering patterns in large amounts of data, for example I suppose like Kepler did with Brahe.

They want a computer geek, who likes to play with test tubes, a sort of Steve Alfred Jobs Nobel or the like.

And I bet it pays more than minimun wage.
