These folks have created a map where the most and least racist, homophobic and disability related tweets originate from

Looking at it on a countrywide scale it's pretty depressing, but when you zoom into state or county level, it actually becomes a much better picture.

Seems that the vast majority of people tweeting hate speech are very localized, and much of the country has grown up.

The map is interactive, so you can look right down to your own county.

From the site

"The prominence of debates around online bullying and the censorship of hate speech prompted us to examine how social media has become an important conduit for hate speech, and how particular terminology used to degrade a given minority group is expressed geographically. As we’ve documented in a variety of cases, the virtual spaces of social media are intensely tied to particular socio-spatial contexts in the offline world, and as this work shows, the geography of online hate speech is no different.

Rather than focusing just on hate directed towards a single individual at a single point in time, we wanted to analyze a broader swath of discriminatory speech in social media, including the usage of racist, homophobic and ableist slurs."

Take a look and see where your state or county stands.

Hate Map

This is interesting but it is very limited. It's first limited by simply the amount of people who use Twitter. I guarantee that there are racist and/or homophobic people in my neck of the woods but very few people here use Twitter.

It's further limited by people's sense of propriety on Twitter. Some people don't put that kind of stuff out there even if they think it.

So...this is a map of the most un-self-conscious, racist/homophobic/hating Twitter users. This sounds more like a baseball stat than a demographic.

The hate words were the run-of-the-mill potty mouth terms.

We've known potty mouth to be poor form.

And Julian Assange, as of the history of hate is just a Jesus Christ to it. I'll give you the old benefit of estranged "perspectives" for it. Maybe the missing God is different for the perspectival from the detached; "I don't know you" bit. Orwellian stuff.

The map didn't surprise me all that much. I expected it to be red in the south and the west to be absent of it. The only thing that might have been surpising is the red in the northeast.

Apparently Central Kansas and Georgia have seething anti-Asian communities.

Weird.

Because it's just tweets, and it's at the county level, you could literally have one raving lunatic in your county who uses the "n" word hundreds of times a day that will skew the results.

I also wonder about using the word "queer" as a derogatory response.. I know a lot of gay men and women who use it descriptively, and not in a negative way.. Which would account for the northeast corridor being red maybe??

Same with the word "cripple."

I've referred to people before as emotional cripples. It doesn't mean I'm anti-disabled or anything.

in the details it stated:

Quote:
Because algorithmic sentiment analysis would automatically classify any tweet containing 'hate words' as "negative," this project relied upon the HSU students to read the entirety of tweet and classify it as positive, neutral or negative based on a predefined rubric. Only those tweets that were identified by human readers as negative were used in this analysis.

The numbers that appear in the map during a mouse hover indicate the total number of hateful tweets and number of unique users sending them in each county.

though I can't actually see any numbers, but my computer has issues with hovering.

After finding theses words in tweets.they then had students read in what contexts they were being used. That is why tweets like dykesonbikes did not go into the total as hate

Some John Lennon-like dude popped up over a thousand years ago, attempts to aid perceptions of those around him so that they take to one another more compassionately than competitively and just as you would suspect - The idiotic human race interpreted the wisdom as "being at the mercy of an unstoppable power" that wants entirely everything and everyone indifferent to what was considered 'normal' in 900 B.C. to be eradicated.

I prefer 'Cripple' as a verb. *Rubs evil little mitts together*
