Its simple really. The market is dominated by Apple, Microsoft and Linux/Unix.

Linux/Unix - is open source mostly. You can pay for support, however it is not especially intuitive, so a lot of people are scared to use it.

Microsoft - Microsoft are responsible for WIndows (both home use and Server). However they are only in charge of the software. They do not support the hardware, they just recommend what should work and what will not. However this means that they only have to pay for software R&D.

Apple however, not only produce software. They produce hardware and garuntee that it is all compatible. There is (as far as I am aware) no issue about drivers, compatible hardware, etc. This is all taken care of by Apple. Also it is all pre configured and the interface is usable by simpletons. However it is very hard to tweak or modify the Apple OS and it is not very customisable like windows or Linux/Unix are.

3rd Party Vendors - If you are wondering why you can buy a PC from Dell, Compaq, etc. The company will garuntee the OS working on their hardware config. But if you update it yourself with you lose warantee and have no garuntee of it being compatible with the current setup.

Except Microsoft has a large hardware division, and is now manufacturing PCs.

It's also probably worth mentioning that if you work in the creative sector, Apple Macs are the industry standard. I'm not quite sure what the technical reasons are, but Apple computers seem to do a much better job of running Adobe suite applications like Photoshop or Illustrator.

They just take getting used to really. Windows is so second nature to most people at this point that I can see why it might be frustrating.
I'm a fan of the hardware mostly though, maybe they make better machines now, but the last Microsoft computer I had was super noisy and took up twice as much space as my Mac does since it wasn't all in one unit, despite having a considerably smaller monitor.

We had a Mac for the first year that I worked at my job. I'm hoping it was because it was old but that thing was the slowest piece of crap computer I've ever seen in my life. Just trying to maintain a check ledger (4-5 entries in one day) took 10 minutes.

Everything else was so different I just couldn't get used to it. It took me almost a year to figure out how to change the size of my windows. I think I had to Google it. I also had to watch a YouTube video to find out how to make it print in grayscale.

The Mac and I are not friends. I can feel it staring at me from the cubby hole it sits in.

Yeah, that doesn't sound great! But I think part of my point about Windows being so natural to people shows up in your comment. You sound annoyed about having to Google how to work a simple function, but "in the beginning" everybody needed teaching how to use PCs, they're not all that intuitive, we've just all learnt how to work them now.

Absolutely. My intent was to support that.

I'd worked with Windows for 20 years before ever touching a Mac. Old habits die hard and Windows habits do weird things on a Mac.

Oh sorry! I think I must have gone into "Defend Apple!" mode after over imagining your abandoned Mac sobbing quietly in its cubby hole.

I doubt it's sobbing. I think it's raging.

They should just bring back DOS. Then you just tye what you want your computer to do.

On my linux box I even have a command line web browser and email client.

Although the web browser is kinda limited.
