This news is over a 100 days old, but it sure gives a voter something uncomfortable to think about .

Quote:

Johnston has recorded himself demonstrating how a logic analyzer, an Allen wrench and a screwdriver is all it takes to change votes to register for one candidate instead of another by using a man-in-the-middle attack.

I was surprised at how simple it was for me to access the ROM memory chips containing the firmware that controls the vote-counting,” Appel writes on his personal website. Despite claims from Sequoia that the machine wasn’t easily hackable, Appel says, “The AVC Advantage can be easily manipulated to throw an election because the chips which control the vote-counting are not soldered on to the circuit board of the DRE. This means the vote-counting firmware can be removed and replace with fraudulent firmware.”

The only way to make any machine unhackable is too switch it off. But even then you can just use social engineering to get somebody to switch it back on for you.

As for soldering chips onto circuit board. IC's(chips) easily overheat and are often manufactured faulty. If you plug them into a DIM,there is less risk of them overheating and they are easily replaced if faulty. Its cheaper to replace a chip than a whole circuit board.

In my opinion, if someone can build it someone can get into it.

Well thats totally true. Just because yu are employed by a company to provide information security and network security does not make ypur work god like and unpenetratable.

There are people just as clever on the other side of the fence. The only difference is they are not employed by the same people as you.

True, and when the people on the other side of the fence get caught, the company or government hires them to work for them and so on, and so on......

Ive heard that a lot. I dunno if it still happens as much, I know it used to. I guess it depends the complexity of the system they are able to hack.

Like Anonymous if they rounded up all its members, I doubt they would all be offered jobs. But guess it depends on the company who was hacked. After all, who would you hire:

Security staff who make systems that arnt that secure.
Or the person who is better than your current security staff.

It really does not matter if soldering chips onto circuit board it not as easy as pie or if hacking a voting machine isn't glamours or whatever.
The bottom line is simple.
Until the machine has been found to be hacked and whoever is behind the hacking of said machine is busted and stopped, anyone voting on that machine is casting a vote for 'the other guy' .
That is why I said what I did about it giving a voter something uncomfortable to think about.
That is where I'm coming from anyways.

And I totally agree that any man made machine can be hacked.
I know a guy that unplugs his modem every time he powers off his machines, he says that a good hacker isn't after what ever piddly s*** crap the regular Joe has on their machine , but is after as many connections as he can get on a network,in order to be able to hack into something worth while. ( I don't know if it's true or just paranoia )This guy has a half dozen machines on a network just for his own personal use. A real geek.

Your talking about Botnets. If you do a DOS or a DDOS attack on a machine, if you only have one cmputer your not going to do much.

But with something like the Srizbi Notnet which has an estimates 450, 000 zombies(infexted hosts), you are going to stop service. It wa this sort of attack that bought Amazon crashing down.

Scarey thing is they are not that complicated to make. They are just not worth spending your life in a cell though, in my eyes.

I gave up my hacking ways many years ago. Once you get a bit older you realise that it just aint worth it.

Computers and cars have a lot in common for me, I know how to remove and replace any thing that can be R&R'd, I can change the blinker fluid in my car and make sure to water my mouse on a timely basis. As a hacker I would be worthless.
Now this friend I told about, he is old school , the only way to describe just how old his school is ,, when ole Bill Gates came out with the user friendly windows and a mouse to go with it , my friend's computer skills and know how became obsolete for all intents and purposes.

If anonymous hacked my company net security system, I wouldn't hire them/him/her, I'd run, because if they hacked it, they'd probably have a cause for doing so. They don't waste their time with minute stuff...

Most people are honest, though. Whether for fear of being caught or just because they were raised with the morality of one person's choice is their choice. I'll still b**** about voting for these a*****es, but I won't let this stop me.

I'm not sure how this pertains to how easy it seems to be to hack the voting machines. I purposely DID NOT put this in the politics forums because I do not want to discuss politicians .

Hacking computers it seem is easier than a Hollywood rerun. See this on how to hack voting machines:

https://joemiller.us/2011/09/aks-voting-machines-can-be-hacked-by-remote-control-for-10-2/

Also we are getting international hackers invading the US now. So how long is it before a foreign power is electing our government?

Is it really that much harder to hand mark and hand count ballots?

I really trust people more than I trust machines to count ballots.

Lets get back to basics, and do the work ourselves.

Yes. You have to pay actual people to do that. Either that or you get volunteers and ... well... you get what you pay for.

Why? Do you think that human people with opinions are likely to be more honest? Look back at my answer to your first question. Either we're going to be paying a crap load of people to count these ballots or people will volunteer. How much easier do you suppose it would be to rig an election using actual people vs using a computer (which would have no opinion on the outcome)?
