This is actually legit. It's from Microsoft.

Go to https://www.microsofthup.com/hupus/home.aspx?culture=en-US
Use a Hotmail address and this code: 05383F4FAC

That's it.

I believe they intentionally leak these codes early in product lifecycles to give highly-connected internet users (the ones who will find the deals early) a way to download it cheaply. This has several effects: it kickstarts adoption rates, especially among the super-important techie segment, and it staves off piracy by giving an attractive, cheap alternative.

Anyway, the whole thing works. It's not a scam or anything. The Home Use Program has been around a while, it's just that the partner code was "leaked." I've gotten a handful of Office and Windows versions this way, and they have never rejected a key. Why would they, after all - I think the entire point of this is to make techies happy with their products.

Word of warning: the installer MS gives you installs every option for every program with no way to change it. You can download their 60 day trial as an IMG file, burn it to disc, then install it with the typical Office customization options here:
https://care.dlservice.microsoft.com/download/2/9/C/29CC45EF-4CDA-4710-9FB3-1489786570A1/OfficeProfessionalPlus_x86_en-us.img?lcid=1033?siteID=rGMTN56tf_w-kmJ7jZdJw9oU52.ndDBauQ

This installer works with the key they give you after purchase.

FYI, this deal is dead for Hotmail addresses. You may be able to use it with some other corporate or .edu addresses.

So I can use my company email address to get it, but not my hotmail or yahoo?

Does it give you the code to download from my home laptop? because I can't download on my work one.

However, not a big deal since I can actually just get it from my company for free. Or through my company it's on our internal website how to do it.

Thanks!

Only if your company is on the list. It'll either accept or reject the email address on that first screen. Chances are your work email will not work.

Yeah, I get it for free from work too, but it would be interesting to use my .edu to see if it works.

I got a fully functional "Office" program for free from Open Office

I have OO as well and, though it works well by itself, it doesn't seem to be compatible with Microsoft Office. If I send people documents that I've made with OO (.odt), they cannot open them. If I email something I've made on my home computer (.doc), the document will often be a little off when I open it.

Yup. Put together a nice chart in Excel then open it in OO. Funny.

I can't say I've been unfortunate enough to do that. Our previous computer in the office was a Mac and I hated spreadsheets from that version. In fact...you might remember my hatred of that particular spreadsheet since you helped me print a portion of it.

It was much faster for me to simply create a new spreadsheet when we got the new computer.

I went and opened a random lab report I made last semester in OO Writer and MS word, side by side.

Here's page 2.

Then I tried to open one of the spreadsheets I used for data collection in another lab. OO Calc promptly crashed.

Then I uninstalled OO. The uninstall program only removed half of the Start Menu links and generated an error that it couldn't remove some of them. Like.. what?

Yeah. OO has some uses, but it's no replacement for Office for anyone who actually uses their programs a lot. And if you use MS Office at work or school anyway, using OO is a nightmare. At $10 Office is a no-brainer.

I've had similar problems with word vs swriter. You can't even fix the formatting.
