What do you think of Puerto Rico being the 51st US state?

I am pro granting statehood to: Guam, the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands, Puerto Rico, United States Virgin Islands, and Washington, DC.

Puerto Rico and Washington, DC are probably the only ones that actually want statehood.

I don't really see an argument or reason. The people there seem to want it to get more benefits.

I had read somewhere that Puerto Rico is forced to use Merchant Marines for their oceanic transportation of all imported goods, this is required by law, and that if this was not the law, their cost of all imported goods would drop by 40% and it would save them over 100 million in product exportation. These costs, as I understood it, greatly hurt the people of Puerto Rico. I am wondering if they become a state, if this will stop. As of my understanding no other territory owned by the US is forced to abide by the law of using US Merchant Marines for their shipments.

Wait a sec...

54% want a change, of those 67% want to be a state..

so 67% x 54% = 36% want to become a state.

Hell, they'll fit right in, but it'll sort'a be like people wanting to get on the Titanic.

You'd better leave the country before it's destroyed.

There are 50. DC is not a state, its a district so perhaps that is why you think 51?

No I was always told that Hawaii was the 51st state for some reason. Might have been an unofficial type thing that I took as fact maybe?

In my defense we don't do American geography over here.

Hawaii is the 50th state. You may have heard Puerto Rico described that way. It's just a figure of speech though. Sometimes Canada is referred to that way as well, obviously facetiously.

You can have Quebec.

Don't touch that...you don't know where it's been....

Although if we get Puerto Rico and then Quebec we can play 52 pickup.
