Is this just a new way to profile minorities?

There is a new ordinance in Florida that fines anyone who is wearing sagging pants 25 dollars. The police are doing this to have a reason to stop anyone they think may be carrying a gun or drugs. I think this is a violation of people's right to wear what they want.

What do you think?

What is the official justification for the fine?

Well, the first time is just a warning...pull that s*** up, Holmes, nobody wants to look at your stupid underwear, you POS!!! Now, is it a bit of a leap to getting drugs and guns off the street, I don't know. Sounds a tad like profiling to me......

Good to see that in that part of Florida the police have so little to do they fine people for wearing saggy pants.

Interesting, the police chief outright says it's for the purpose of gaining the opportunity to check them for other crimes.

Yes, which is why I said it sounds like profiling to me. If I wore droopy jeans and my Victoria Secrets were showing, would I get a warning? How about it, I've seen *ahem* "ladies" showing their thong tops......do they also get fined in Cocoa?

I'm not sure profiling is exactly right. It definitely targets the gang affiliated types, undoubtedly, but those aren't limited to minorities.

The original post says that this limits people's "right" to wear whatever they want. But there is no such right. I'm not sure what the laws are regarding being out in public in one's underwear for example. These guys are showing their boxers to the world, it could be considered indecent.

Speaking of profiling, did you guys know that a lot of graduate programs and medical schools require you to include a photo of yourself with an application?

People who think that profiling and racism don't exist are insane.

This is true but their "private parts" are not exposed. I don't think that would be considered indecent exposure.

Lilli, I don't know about California, but here in Sarasota people parade around in THONGS at grocery stores because of the close proximity to the Gulf of Mexico and the fact that we are a tourist town. Also, the weather is great for the notion of "the less clothes the better". A few years back, it was a "fad" for young girls to wear boys boxers as shorts, don't know if that's changed. Personally, I really don't care if people are wearing saggy pants with undies showing...so what? I don't see how they can walk safely, but hey, that's not my problem.

Alright everyone back off!

Down here in FLA we like guns.

We don't like baggy pants.

We like shooting people.

We don't like hoodies.

We like to vote and to vote often.

We also like to stop people we don't like from voting.

This is not racial profiling.

It is the ultimate reality show:

"Live its Saturday Night!".... I mean "Live its Florida!"

Personally don't care what people are wearing as long as they're not hurting anyone. I'm just curious what their legal justification is for this law, on its own merits other than as a likely identifier of criminals to be used to justify searching them.
