Thank you..

I had told Tino that I'd do one of these after the counts were in, but I was really dreading doing that much more typing..

So, thanks for getting me off the hook.

There were several websites that did it, so I just cut and pasted from one of them for this, as I was interested.

I couldn't find anything for medals per participant, though, as that would have been mildly interesting as well.

Really...?

Seriously, who is the anally retentive individual who compiles these lists..? What use do they serve..?

We hear a lot of this "We're only a small nation" stuff from the Scots and Welsh and Northern Irish every time we beat them at football, but what they usually conveniently overlook, when they say "We're a country of only 3 million" or whatever, is the 8 million or so of their countryment that live in England, and the uncountable number of expats who live in other places who would all be eligible to pull on a vest for them if they so desired.

The global community is so diverse and so mixed that any number of individuals would be legally able to compete for any number of countries to the extent that suggesting a link between medals and numbers per head of population for that country is at the very, very best, extremely tenuous.

These 'per capita' figures mean nothing, they are, in my opinion, just a banal exercise in number crunching for spotters who consider some arbitrary statistic to be more important than the sporting performance for which the medals are awarded.

I've said it so many times and I'll say it again... honestly..... It really... really... REALLY isn't about finishing at the top (or bottom) of any list however it's compiled.

It's supposed to be about the sport, something about which there has been very little discussion.

People make statistical comparisions of a lot of things in sports. If you don't like it, then you don't have to read them.

Fair comment and I can understand the purpose of some stats, such as Ian Bell's batting average, or Andy Carroll's scoring rate (if he has one) or how many successful goals Jonny Wilkinson kicks in a season. These things can be a factor in the selection of individuals for key matches so they are relevant.

But seriously.... medal tables per capita...? Really...?

But yes.... you're right. I don't have to read them and trust me, I don't go out of my way to do so, but when they do drift across my span of attention I cannot help but be saddened at the pointless waste of time that some muppet somewhere has spent in compliling them. Whoever he / she is, they really could do with gainful employment.

Hey look!

The BBC did one as well, but they also factored in a countries wealth, and the importance they place on sport.

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/magazine-18976333

I guess there are a few muppets at the BBC who need gainful employment as well.

Oh a lot of people do nothing but statistics for a living, write books on the subject. My dad was one of them, and it was no suprise then, that he was fascinated by statistical analysis in sports more than anything else regarding sports. For many, sports is simply an avenue from the real world to have fun with numbers and figures.

Indeed, baseball was the first thing that came to mind. The only sport I can think of where you'll hear the commentators say something as absurd as "This will be the fourth time he's struck out in the 5th inning against a left handed pitcher with runners on 1st and 3rd with two outs at Wrigley field."

Dang.

I get irked by commentators in sports. I get heated and my bronzer melts when I hear them say the word allowed. Yes, it makes me that angry.

Allowed...goalie so and so allowed three goals tonight, pitcher so and so allowed two home runs tonight...really, WTF. It makes it seem like the other player asked them, mind if I get a goal or mind if I get a home run and the goalie or pitcher said okay and stood there and let them get a goal or homerun. No one allowed it, they tried to stop it and prevent it from happening. Sometimes I was allowed a cookie before dinner as a child and sometimes not. If I snuck a cookie no one allowed me to have it.

For the love of all that is holy, stop saying allowed!

Rant done!

Totally understandable. It's not like they just stood there and didn't try, right?

Do not argue with the announcers. They are always right don't you know. I've seen our goaltender decide to have a sip of water while the other team was attacking and they scored. He was thirsty, therefore allowed that puck to go in.
