This is old and I don't agree with everything Spike Lee says but I totally agree with this and I just need to say that I agree with this.

In the old days they had something called blackface. Actors, both white and black, would put on blackface makeup and act like stereotypical black people. The "gangsta" subculture is the same as blackface. It is an insult to all intelligent black people.

Seems like an extreme misconception.

"You can't look at rap and hip-hop and say, 'That's how black people are,' " Carter said. "Not all of us are like that."

Well duh. Is there anybody who thinks, "Hey, what are black people like? Oh, I know, I'll watch a music video because those always give accurate portrayals of an entire demographic of people."

I agree with what Spike Lee says somewhat, not completely.

I don't think the 'gangsta' 'hip hop' culture puts black people in any kind of positive light.

Very true. Where I grew up, there were no black people. I saw black people on tv and in movie but it always seemed to be what I know now is stereotype but at the time, when you are young, you do not know any better.

My first time seeing anyone who was black, I was perhaps 12 and traveling to DC area. I got out of car and shouted "what up my homies" cause that is what I saw on tv and thought that was the polite thing to say to a black person as a greeting. They looked at me then thought it was funny and shouted back "what up cracker." I had to ask my family what a cracker was.
