Spanking study says it leads to possible mental illness and/or drug abuse which I agree with because of personal issues I had.

And this is on top of numerous studies already linking corporal punishment to unempathetic behavior in adulthood. This new one published by the Journal of Pediatrics studied over 30,000 cases and found a much greater instance of mental disorders and illnesses in adulthood.

There are better ways to discipline your child that are more effective. It just requires more work, effort, and patience is all, something many seem to not want to do. If that's the case, don't have a child. Spanking gets the immediate job done, yes, but look at the long term effects here when teaching your children to look after their hide rather than the real merits of virtuous behavior.

I was only spanked twice. Once I do not remember. It was by my grandmother. Apparently I created such a fuss I made her feel terribly guilty and she swore she would never do it again. The second time was by my father and it was a wimpy one smack on the butt deal.

However I make no promises to the state of my mental health.

On a serious note, I do not believe that corporal punishment really does much good. Especially if it is the first line of defense.

I think you're fine. It's probably more the regular or habitual spankers that may create these effects in their children.

Thanks. (Although I still maintain my right to be nuts occasionally - I find it to be quite cathartic. )

I agree about 'serial' spankers. I just don't think it's an appropriate way to deal with children. A pop on the butt to get their attention every blue moon during a tantrum is one thing. But to do it all the time? I'd think that would tell the kids that it's okay to turn to violence to resolve conflicts or have them live in fear of being spanked. Neither are healthy options for kids.

Kids misbehave and they aren't perfect. But I think it is a parenting failure to rely on spanking.

As a newby mom, I didn't know too many other tools for disciplining my child. I have since learned many and for the most part avoid physical punishments, and yelling as well. Actually, I try to avoid punitive discipline at all and focus on teaching appropriate behavior and expectations. I agree that corporal punishment is not beneficial, and I don't doubt it is related to mental illnesses. However, admittedly, when I am very tired or very frustrated, the "work" Leon spoke of tends to just feel like too much and I resort to my own raising as an example, and I do what feels good. Fortunately I pretty well have discipline under control enough now that my kids don't really try me too often, including when I am tired and not up to doing a good job.

I got my a** beat pretty good on an on-and-off-again basis by my first step-dad whenever we did anything against his say. I 'learned' to be quiet and not call attention to myself in his or an adults presence.

As an adult I'm bipolar and publicly asocial to an almost phobic point and only really leave my house when I have to go to work or am out of food and have to go to the store.

*deep sigh* Such is life.

Why do you have a link right back to this thread?
What is the purpose?

It was originally posted in a thread Leon started about the same subject...she was letting him know that you had started one two and he merged them together to keep it from being redundant.
