Interesting story I read about Elijah. Don't make fun of the prophet.

2 Kings Chapter 2 verses 23 and 24

And he went up from thence unto Beth-el: and as he was going by the way, there came forth little children out of the city, and mocked him, and said unto him,Go up, thou bald head; go up, thou bald head

And he turned back, and looked on them, and cursed them in the name of the Lord. And there came forth two she bears out of the wood, and tare forty and two children of them.

Your thread title is wrong, that scripture doesn't say ate, it says the she bears "came out from the woods and went tearing to pieces forty-two children of their number".

The account doesn't say how many there were to start with, btu it sounds like there were an awful lot more than 42 for that many to get caught by the she bears. In that case Elijah may even have been in fear for his life, and it appears Jehovah thought so also since He sent the bears to protect Elisha.

But as you say, and Gamaliel later repeated about the Apostles (Acts 5:38,39) "And so, under the present circumstances, I say to YOU, Do not meddle with these men, but let them alone; (because, if this scheme or this work is from men, it will be overthrown; 39 but if it is from God, YOU will not be able to overthrow them otherwise, YOU may perhaps be found fighters actually against God".

I have to admit that is a scripture which helps keep me strong at times.

ahh the good old days. getting to curse children in the name of the lord, when they make fun of you. yeah, what a great way to make a man feel strong about himself

Another zombie thread!

I wonder if, like the story of Jephthah, this story holds a moral lesson of not cursing people in the name of the Lord.

that could be true. i would expect that the 42 kids would not have been messed up by the bears then.

I dunno. seems like having the death of 42 children on your hands seems a whole lot more sobering than seeing them get chased off.

I suppose you can look at it that way. I guess I was thinking why make the kids suffer when, as an example, I did the wrong thing by cursing in the name of the lord.

I can absolutely understand that. But, what would Elijah have learned in that case?

Sounds a bit like the story in another posting where a teacher had the kids in the class punch the classroom bully.

So Elijah couldn't handle some unruly children, curses them in the name of the lord (a violation of one of the Ten Commandments) and then has two bears do his dirty work.

Wow... all of a sudden I want to be a christian.

I wonder if the number 42 has any significance.
