LONDON RETAINS CROWN AS WORLD'S TOP CITY FOR TOURISTS

London has maintained it's position as the world's number one tourist destination according to the MasterCard Global Destination Cities Index.

London was the most visited city in the world in 2011

@someone_else Said

It might be relevant to note that Jen's information contains projected numbers and Boxer's are actual numbers from the past.

It's not really accurate to say that you're comparing apples and oranges, but there's a huge possibility that you're both correct. Paris has been the #1 most visited city for years past. This year, due to the Diamond Jubilee and the London Olympics, London may be #1.

See? We really can all get along.

We could only get along if Jenny realized that the link she's posting reports that for the second year in a row international tourists spent the most money in London, and accepted the fact that Paris was the most visited..

But, now that I've posted the facts, she will dig in her Birkenstocks and absolutely refuse to accept that London is the second most visited city in the world.

Sad.. but true.

As for getting along.... the individual concerned has a long history on this site of slander, animosity and other forms of childish behaviour towards yours truly. You'll have to ask him why he does it. Sad, isn't it..?

.

Please explain how pointing out that you're wrong, when you're wrong is slanderous, animus, or childish?

And, when you can't, apologize.

To address the original point, if I may strip it down to brass tacks. You're saying people should embrace Royalty and the Olympics because ultimately it brings your county money. Is that about right?

But...if you oppose their policies or something (I honestly have no idea what people protest about regarding these two things) and you suddenly shut up and embrace them just because it makes money...there's a term for such a person. Maybe you've heard it before: "sell-out."

Thank you for addressing the issue.

I'm not suggesting anybody should change their beliefs or principles. What I'm doing is challenging one of the foundations of British Republicanism.... that maintaining the monarchy is an expensive luxury that we can't afford.

When there is evidence that the monarchy actually brings paying tourists into the country, and makes more money than the cost of maintaining it, then that repudiates one of the core Republican arguments.

No...never sell out on your principles... That's a no-no... Simply refrain from using arguments that don't hold water.

I'd love to visit England. There is so much history to enjoy. I also like some of the cars I see on TV running around there, like this one. I'd have a blast cruising around in this Reliant!

It comes from a show called "Only Fools And Horses", about a spiv street trader named Del Boy Trotter, and his put upon brother, Rodney in the working class borough of Peckham in South London. Their get rich quick schemes always fall down around their ears, but the scrapes they get into are hilarious.

The Trotter-Mobile has become iconic of their various adventures.

I view myself as a republican not obsessed with sport. Yet even I have been captivated by the Olympics especially with BBC's comparisons between 2012 and 1948 games also held in London. The Beebs historic dramatisations of our recent past are insightful and informative. I loved the opening ceremony. History from a grass routes perspective plus the torch progress throughout Britain so linking our diverse communities. To see the spectator enthusiasm was inspiring. I loved the opening game of women's football in Cardiff, showing team spirit at its best and I'm not a football fan. Just a fan of women [!]. Also the cyclist who has come first both in Paris and London. He is also a team player. I'm more into cooperation than competition. This is just me though.

france has no royal family ... because the citizens had the guts to end that elitist, aristocratic nonsense ..and not feebly reintroduce it a few years later , as england did... and , france has a thriving tourist industry .... especially paris ... all you need to do is eradicate the so called 'royal' family and keep all the palaces and castles etc ... open them fully to the public and make even more money .... but for me ,the argument isn't about money really ..it's about a thought process that is promoted by subservient minded people ... a thought process that says that one family , regardless of it's disgraceful history,is above all other people in england ... i happen to think that is wrong.

We play handball on our lunch hour at work.. All you need is a ball, and a wall, and hands..

It's a good game.

I read in the paper the other day that since the olympics started, there's actually been less business in central London and restaurants are trying to get more punters in.

Apparently people are paying too much attention to the transport warnings issued by TFL and so are avoiding central as much as they can. It's also the most expensive part of London, so I'm not really surprised that people are being sensible after spending hundreds on tickets for the Olympics.
