LONDON RETAINS CROWN AS WORLD'S TOP CITY FOR TOURISTS

London has maintained it's position as the world's number one tourist destination according to the MasterCard Global Destination Cities Index. It is expected to outstrip New York, Bankok, Paris, Singapore and the rest of the top 20 destinations for visitor spend per head of tourist.

https://newsroom.mastercard.com/press-releases/london-crowned-as-top-destination-city-for-second-year-in-a-row-according-to-mastercard-global-index/

London was the most visited city in the world in 2011 and that figure is set to increase by 1.1% according to the Index, and visitor spending is expected to increase by 10.3%.

Some of the figures quoted by the index estimate that visitors to London from New York alone will spend around £710m ($1088) and Dublin, and that visitor numbers from Frankfurt will increase by 20.8% to 416'000.

The report was written by Dr Yuwa Hendrick-Wong, Global Economic Advisor for MasterCard Worldwide. It analyses both visitor traffic and cross-border travel spending of 132 major cities worldwide.

Marlon King, President of MasterCard said "London is a true world beater and offers something for everyone, which is why visitors keep coming back".

So.... what accounts for this phenomenal increase to tourist income to London. It couldn't have anything to do with the Diamond Jubilee and Olympic Games by any chance, could it..?

Although the final figures for the Jubilee weekend are not yet in, early estimates indicate that around £3 billion was made from the events, offset against the cost of staging them of just under £1.5 billion. Double your money in three days. A very nice bit of business for GB PLC, methinks.

The Republicans repeatedly complain about the cost of Royal events, but completely ignore evidence that these events are good for tourism to Britain and generate income for the nation. Simply put.... the monarchy is profitable.

As for the Olympics: Well, it is likely that the Games themselves may not break even, the final account for that will be a long time coming, but there is no doubt that they have highlighted London in a positive way, bringing London into focus as a possible holiday destination for those who may otherwise have not considered it.

To be the number one travel destination globally for two years running, with increasing visitor numbers and revenues year-on-year, at a time when the nation is suffering austerity measures has got to be a good thing.

The moaners won't ever admit it, but the things they dislike the most just happen to be doing a lot of good for the country.

There is a subtle, but important difference between 'Most visited by tourists' and 'top city for tourists'.

Don't know how to break it to you, but London, awesome as it is, ranks number 2 in the worlds most visited cities.

Paris is #1

It is, there's no disagreeing with that.

Boris cuts his own hair by the look of things.

Yes JMO, I agree, there is. One is an assessment based on statistical, financial and other data and is backed up by hard evidence. The other is a subjective estimate based on the personal preferences of anybody who cares to put their point of view.

Whether that difference is "important" or not, is in the degree of weight the individual attaches to it when making their choice of destination.

Apparently, the London Evening Standard reported a couple of weeks ago that London hotels, guest houses and other tourist accommodations are booked to almost 98% of their capacity for the entire period May to September for this year. All campsites and caravan parks around the capital are booked solid, and people who live in Essex are renting out their houses to tourists while they go on holiday this summer. One couple living in Romford have let their house for two weeks in August for £1500 a week.

Nice money if you can get it.

•Although the report predicts that Paris will have fewer international visitors this year – a marginal decline of 0.6% – it will still hold the number two slot in terms of actual numbers of visitors.

Extract from the report I linked to in my OP.

Note: Paris will STILL hold the NUMBER TWO slot in terms of ACTUAL NUMBERS OF VISITORS.

Anybody who doesn't believe me is free to check the link. Read the second paragraph under Analysis of Global Destination Cities Index key highlights:

Some links may suggest otherwise, but those that show Paris as being number one are using 2010 figures provided by... surprise surprise... the Paris Tourism Office.

Well, waddya know.

One link is the personal opinionof Christinalordi. Whoever she is. She is entitled to her opinion, but that hardly constitutes hard statistical data.

One is a link to a blog. Whaaaatt...???

Another is a link that doesn't even open when I click on it.

If that's all you've got, it's a poor effort. Poor...poor.... effort. Shoddy.

However.... be that as it may.....

The point of my OP was to show the Republicans and those who are anti towards the Olympics amongst other British TFS'ers that these two events have been a positive plus to London. The Royal Wedding last year brought a massive boost to London tourism last year, and the Jubilee and Olympics this year.

This isn't about "I-Can-Piss-Higher-Up-The-Wall-Than-You", Well, not for me it isn't. That's the sort of thing that might motivate immature, stupid little boys but not me. I'm making a serious point, aimed at other Britons on this site. So, that wouldn't include you.

You are entitled to post your opinion, but on this issue, it doesn't count for anything.

It might be relevant to note that Jen's information contains projected numbers and Boxer's are actual numbers from the past.

It's not really accurate to say that you're comparing apples and oranges, but there's a huge possibility that you're both correct. Paris has been the #1 most visited city for years past. This year, due to the Diamond Jubilee and the London Olympics, London may be #1.

See? We really can all get along.

To address the original point, if I may strip it down to brass tacks. You're saying people should embrace Royalty and the Olympics because ultimately it brings your county money. Is that about right?

But...if you oppose their policies or something (I honestly have no idea what people protest about regarding these two things) and you suddenly shut up and embrace them just because it makes money...there's a term for such a person. Maybe you've heard it before: "sell-out."

Interesting comment, Elsie... You make a good point in that the only one of his posts that makes any reference to any hard data goes back to 2010, the period before the two years the MasterCard data refers to.

Also... the MasterCard data for 2011 is not a projected figure... it is hard data. The only element of projection is for 2012, but even that is based on actual expenditure already committed by customers. People who have paid for their holidays have a habit of taking them. I think that's fair to say.

As for getting along.... the individual concerned has a long history on this site of slander, animosity and other forms of childish behaviour towards yours truly. You'll have to ask him why he does it. Sad, isn't it..?

True, but that doesn't account for people who don't make travel plans that far in advance. What I was going by was the tense that the articles were written in. Yours was future, Boxer's was past.

Still, it doesn't change the fact that the two of you are arguing different points.
