So, I don't go to the park to be social. I take my kid to the park so that he can be social and that I can become invisible to him so that I can chill out and read while he runs around all crazy with the other kids. I have zero interest in talking to other parents.

The other day I worked until the afternoon, then took the kid out on the kayak chatting about the birds and turtles and whether or not the billy goats would be on the troll bridge this time, and then the plan was to hang out by the playground afterwards while he played and I read.

It was ruined, and this particular day I was really not in the mood to be bothered.

This other girl comes over, one of those ridiculously nice people, and she starts chatting about the kayak and society and yadda yadda yadda. I really wanted her to go away, but she was too nice to be rude to, and I didn't want to be mean either.

I had my book out and open, replied as shortly as I could without being blatantly rude, and went back into my book after I answered. And still she went on and on. I wanted to say to her, "Look, you're really nice and all, and you seem interesting enough, but I'm just not in the mood to sit here and chat with some random stranger about whether society conditions us to lose interest in childish fun. GO. AWAY."

How do you say that nicely when people don't take a hint or pick up on that you're not into the conversation?

I suppose I could have just "What?" after everything she said until she stopped trying. That would have been kind of amusing.

Indeed. I find you can turn most things into an amusing episode with a bit of imagination.

I usually just glare at them until they go away.

I'm not sure that counts as nicer, but I don't doubt its effectiveness.

No polite way without hurting her feelings or leaving an awkward silence in your wake.

I'd just pull out my cellphone and say "Can you excuse me for a second, I need to make a phone call" but I know you, and you don't have a cell phone.

So, I'd pretend that I need to tell my kid something, and get up and do that while then sitting down somewhere else.

If it comes down to it, do a go-away-dance. Just make sure you don't shimmy your chest, that would be a come-hither-dance and you don't want that. Remember unshimmy your chest!

You're really running with this dance thing, aren't ya? I'm afraid that mine are just too powerful as of now though, and I haven't learned the proper control. Experimenting on others would be a bad idea. I don't want her to have to go away to antartica or something; she wouldn't make it there.

Subtly moving around would have been a good idea though.

(And I didn't actually have my phone on me. )

When people glare at me though I normally wink and blow them kisses, that really winds them up.
But not sure how that helps with your situation.

Just completely ignore them and read your book?

Or learn how to say 'I don't speak English in another language', or just say 'Sorry, no English' in a heavy accent. That would have to be your opening statement though

The other option is to out-annoy them, just start a long monologue about something incredibly boring, and possibly complicated, and don't allow them to respond for about 5 minutes. That should scare them off.

You just have to bite your lip and tough it out. It is kinda cute though, her enthusiasm and better that people want to interact with you than the opposite.
You just have to take the rough with the smooth, do you really want to be rude to someone so lovely?
