How can you prevent cold sores from popping up? I know one thing that causes them is to be stressed out and or not getting enough sleep. Not counting kissing someone who has an outbreak. I just got another one this morning. I think it's my second or third outbreak this year. I'm only in April. I want to prevent them. I know how to get rid of it for the time being. I have Carmex and Abreeva. Both are quite effective. I wonder if I was born with it. I've been getting it from a young age.

Seriously? I usually use the Carmex and it takes up to 4 days tops for it to heal. If I use the Abreeva a day and a half and it's gone.

They are a virus, and when the virus flares up you get one. Not sure you can do anything to prevent it really. I got them as a young child, probably from kissing my mom. She gets them frequently. When I was a teen I got one and I squeezed it like a zit until I got every last bit of everything out of it (and it hurt like hell too!), but that was the last one I ever got. Not even a hint of one since.

Try using protection. Just pull a surgical latex glove over your head before you go off to visit the UMass campus.

So funny you should start this thread. I haven't had one in YEARS, and just got one on Saturday. I went to the pharmacy today and almost died (Abreeva is close to $20.00 a tube here!!!!!) so the pharmacist recommended some Neosporin ointment or triple antibiotic. It doesn't dry it up but will kill the infection!

I used to get them frequently but they've really slowed down. I don't know if it's an age thing but I'm happy they don't come as often.

I've never found anything that worked except just letting it run it's course. I used to dab rubbing alcohol on it all the time while it was active and it seemed to dry it out faster.

My son used to get them from holding nails in his mouth while he worked. Still haven't figured that one out but he hasn't had one since he quit working that job.

You have to let it run it's course. But the Carmex is excellent stuff, and will help dry it out much, much quicker.

Same here. The Abreeva I purchased cost me around $19 and it is pretty small. I helps dry and kill it in at most a day.

I used to get them once a year ever since I was like 5. Ever since I started working, due to stress, lack of sleep and possibly not washing my hands enough since we have disgusting customers at our job and they leave the carts disgusting and filthy.

That probably is the best way. I do apply the Carmex and Abreeva from time to time. Usually every 30 minutes or every hour.

Do you ever get a warning when it's about to come on? Like does your mouth start to get itchy? If so, I'd start using the carmex at that point, rather than wait for an actual outbreak.

I did get the weird itch. Every time I feel it, I throw on carmex or abreeva immediately. Sometimes it's a false alarm and sometimes it's still comes out.

Cool. Just keep doing that.

Hope it just 'goes away' oneday for good. They can be a real discomfort, not to mention embarrasing.

There's a section in here about avoiding outbreaks. I thought this part was interesting:

"Always use lip balm and sunscreen on your face. Too much sunlight can cause cold sores to flare."

I hope it goes away for good too. I wish I could find a way to not just prevent it, but to get rid of the virus.

I do use it sometimes. Mainly during the winter. I don't use sunscreen and I didn't know too much sunlight can cause cold sores to flare. Thanks for the link that is very interesting.
