Impose English as the official language of the United States???

Firstly, Americans would seem to need to learn to speak it, surely?

Oh, now that was naughty... but I liked it.

Lessons in spelling might be appropriate too. Or would that be 'lessonz' in American-ese...?

It is misguided to think that we uphold the principles that once made this nation great by imposing English as an official language. It is, in fact, distinctly un-American and quite liberal and progressive to use government to compel people into what we feel are good social manners. <<< snippet from link

What nonsense..!! To claim, even obliquely, that it is a liberal principle to impose a national language is just plain silly.

Liberalism, by it's very nature, promotes diversity of culture. It's reasonable to say that English is the majority language in the US, but a nation that was almost founded on immigration must surely tolerate the native tongues of those who come there and make it what it is.

In Britain, the birthplace of the English language, we have a number of other languages. Welsh, Kernewek (Cornish) and Scottish Gaelic are in, at least, regional use. Welsh is taught in schools in Wales and Mebyon Kernow, the political party for Cornwall, are attempting to have Kernewek formally added to the school curriculum in Cornwall.

Our census is printed in more than fifty languages for the benefit of those who live here, who use English as a second language (or don't speak it at all), as are the information leaflets for social benefit claimants.

We are a liberal nation and we embrace diversity. That is a liberal concept. To say that liberalism is restrictive and narrow focused is just plain wrong.

That's because you're looking at British Liberals and assuming that's what everyone means when they say "Liberal". Note that I didn't completely agree with the author's bashing of Liberals, but understand Liberal and Conservative are NOT universal concepts and mean very different things in every country.

You don't need to - I am familiar with them all.

You should be aware that 'Essex' and 'Cockney' (Central London) are frankly these days almost the same thing lol. Southern is not an accent. Liverpool (Scouse) doesn't count.

Why should we be aware of any of those things? Do they matter to us? Will awareness of them be somehow life changing?

I didn't think so.

I only comment because you are too far away to see my facial expression.
