Green Accounting..? What a novel concept that is..!!

Apparently, we're going to have to put a value on environmental assets in the future.

At a world conference on sustainable development to be held in Brazil in June, the Environment Secretary, Caroline Spellman, will spearhead a move to get all countries to move from statements such as Gross Domestic Product to national accounts based on (get this) " GDP+" which would involve assessing the balance of their "Natural Capital" such as ecosystems that provide everything from oxygen and water to flood defences.

The British Government has already taken the first steps down this road and hopes to have a full set of it's own GDP+ national accounts by 2020.

I don't have any knowledge about that kind of thing, so I'm just going to say 'yay.'

I'm going to say they are stretching the English language to breaking point and beyond.

Hmmm, fair comment, but my concerns are:

a) Is it at all necessary?
b) What tangible benefits will it bring?
c) How many layers of bureaucracy will go into making it work, and how much will that cost the taxpayer?

WHOA!!!

Shoot me as a slow thinker.

These "Natural Capital Assets" they are our resources? They want to catalogue them?

That's the Zeitgeist "Resource Based Economy" idea.
