This could go under several different forums, but I chose news.

State representative Peter Palumbo (D-RI) called the 16 year old girl that reported the prayer mural to the ACLU an "evil little thing" in a radio interview. If that wasn't enough, he then went on to say that she was being "coerced by evil people".

Unbelievable. Does he not hear himself? He's attacking a young girl because her beliefs don't coincide with his. Or more exactly, her lack of beliefs. Her "sin'? She was raised by atheists.

So much for freedom of religion.

It's "Freedom OF religion", not freedom FROM religion.

In case anyone was actually wondering, this is what the first amendment actually says:

"Congress shall make NO LAW respecting an establishment of religion or prohibiting the free exercise thereof"

Point being that no acutal law was passed by Congress, so the first amendment has absolutely bearing in this discussion. Let me know when that Congressman starts writing up legislation to declare that 16 year old girl an "evil little thing."

Good thing you didn't write the constitution. We would never have made it past the first hundred years.

The framers were quite clear. Religious dogma was not to be used to rule the nation. Simply because of their background, they had seen what it could do. One can't simply elevate themselves because they have faith and others don't. That's not how our government works.

So then you have no problem with a state lawmaker leading a public persecution campaign against this child?

It's gotten quite ugly and he's quite irresponsible for saying this. It's not about legality at this point - well except if this poor girl has any of the threats that have been made carried out. Bodily violence etc.

Hoppy's actually right in this equation, again this is what the 1st amendment actually says:

"Congress shall make NO LAW respecting an establishment of religion or prohibiting the free exercise thereof."

Humm how exactly was any law passed here? That Congressman's every bit entitled to his religious beliefs, and has every right (as you and I), to express those beliefs.

The ONLY question here was there any attempt to pass a law here? Sorry that's how the Constitution actually works.

Sure it doesn't make this Congressman a "swell guy" but there was no violation of the constitution here.

See above post.

If you want to get into legal semantics you'll also have to go over about 200 years or so of legal precedents that actually do support separation of church and state.

The man went on public radio, not as a private citizen, but as a representative and chose to call out a 16 year old girl for actually forcing them to obey that law set by centuries of legal precedent.

However, this topic to me is more about being responsible for one's behavior. He may not have intended it, but he is sanctioning the horrific behavior that is now being handed out to this girl. This so called 'christian' man has taken it upon himself to draw the line of who he will and will not represent. His statement "she has been coerced by evil people" basically calls all atheists or secularists evil.

Surely, you do not mean to argue that the framers of the constitution condoned and legally gave authority to this type of behavior just because a person doesn't have faith in god?

I would LOVE for you to point out how this conduct is in violation of ANY legal precedent, I hope for your sake you have access to WestLaw and/or LexisNexis and you are prepared to stay up all night struggling for any legal precedent that can even remotely suggest that a Congressman speaking on public radio violated someone's 1st Amendment rights to freedom of religion.

You are flat out wrong my dear, and I know the Constitution and stare decisis on this matter extremely well.

Hint: If I was you I would begin back tracing my steps and start arguing how this was an act of slander rather than a violation of someone's 1st admendment rights.

I don't see how this has a whole lot to do with the Constitution really. The bottom line is, this is a representative calling one of his constituents "evil" because one of them wanted something that the other one didn't.

Immature and out of line.

And what is a good citizen? Simply one who never says, does or thinks anything that is unusual. Schools are maintained in order to bring this uniformity up to the highest possible point. A school is a hopper into which children are heaved while they are still young and tender; therein they are pressed into certain standard shapes and covered from head to heels with official rubber-stamps.
