Professor Jean Golding got an honour this year which I'm thrilled about. She created a longitudinal study of children and their parents called ALSPAC (Children of the 90s) and has been testing the children in various ways since they were born in order to find out things like the fat gene, asthma and what things mothers should eat during pregnancy.

I'm part of the study and the amount of work they put in is extraordinary. It's really fun to be part of the study and know that you're helping other people.

Good to see that 21 yr old women from Manchester who suffers from neurofibramatosis got awarded an MBE for raising over a hundred grand for ill kiddies, also the reformed gang member..these are kind of people that deserve recognition not some actress.

Was watching that Stuart Hall on the news this morning and he mentioned how he had been looking through the honours list.I can't remember his exact words but he didn't come across very well, boasting about how much he had raised for charity ect.. as if he was owed this title. The two youngsters mentioned above seemed humble about it all.

TBH I'd never heard of him before.

That is great, I too am glad to see what I deem to be more worthy people getting honoured. Sports personalities and actors etc do a job that they are very well paid for- the 'little' people who do charity work or make a real difference to the places where they live deserve to be honoured for their contrubnutions to society

I agree entirely, Sparkles. That's why I mentioned the lollipop ladies and Chris Preddie. It's a way of telling people that your efforts will be recognised and appreciated, although I heard from one of my old team when I was at Camborne lab, that when one of his former colleagues got his MBE, he was chuffed at getting the gong, but grumbled like mad about how it cost him a fortune for his wife's new outfit when they went to Buck House for the investiture.

Some people are never happy, are they..? LOL...

Yeah I agree, lollypop ladies etc do valuable jobs a lot of people wouldnt fancy but they keep kiddies safe so yeah its nice to see them being recognised. I was quite taken with Chris (if its the right boy I'm thinking of) whose two cousins killed a boy and he turned his back on them in favour of reeducating gang culture- his was a more deserved award. oh dear, yay for the MBE but boo for a new outfit! Agreed, some folk are hard to please- my mother would be like that!

I agree, but I like that actors and the such are honoured too- the arts are important so it's good to see it being recognised, especially at a time where funding has been cut for so many arts based charities as it is. Actors, musicians and sports personalities help make Britain a nicer, more bearable place. While they may not be saving the world, they do provide escapism and comfort to people as well.

I obviously do like actors, musicians and the like becuase of the escapism they provide but I do feel sometimes they are built up to be made to be more important than they really are. Hopefully the charities will get a bit more of a boost, its a shame to see them suffer in times of recession

Absolutely. Helena Bonham-Carter is a very talented woman and is thoroughly deserving of her award.

I'd be interested in your thoughts on somebody like Banksie, Sis. He's a genuine artist, but is derided in some quarters as a vandal because of the nature of his art.

Also, it's questionable whether, if offered, would he accept an award. What do you think..?

Would "Art for art's sake" be compromised by the acceptance of an establishment award..?

I love Banksy and would call him more of a street artist than the typical graffiti 'artist.'

Considering the grey area that legally surrounds his work though I don't see him ever getting an honour- they can't really be seen to be rewarding people who play fast and loose with the law. If he did though I don't think he'd accept it but he'd definitely use it as a theme in his work.

I could see someone like Damien Hirst get that kind of honour though.

Yes, good comment. To officially recognise his work could be construed as an encouragement to others to "vandalise".
