I was wondering about what people thought of community sentences being an alternative punishment to crimes than short prison sentences, if either way would be more effective at rehabilitation offenders and just peoples opinions in general? It is for my school dissertation so any help I would be very grateful for

Thank You

It's for my advanced higher modern studies dissertation, so the Scottish equivalent to A levels. Probably should have said that sorry not anywhere near the standard of a university dissertation.

I have three aims; aim 1 is does prison carry out it's rehabilitative purpose effectively which is what I am currently working on but any information or points of view to do with prison / restorative justice would be really helpful thanks

Our teacher was taken to hospital, so we have a cover teacher who used to teach at another school in the area so she is wanting a first-draft of our first aim in before the christmas holidays.
Thank you so much, if you have anything in your notes that would help I would really appreciate the help

I must not be understanding what your other two aims are.

I don't think there's a blanket answer for that. It seems to me that for non-violent first offenders, there is a program where they do community service and they're on probation without really serving any jail time.

It really depends on the nature of the crime though.

Oh I forgot....I think community service would be great for people who are convicted (that's not the right word, but I think you know what I mean) of vandalism or maybe petty theft.

Personally I am of the opinion that prison is ineffective at rehabilitation. Recidivism rates are what lead me to this conclusion. For that reason I think we need to view prison not as punishment for the person who committed the crime, but rather as protection for the rest of society. If society needs protection from someone then they need to be locked up. If their crime is not one society needs to be protected from (drug use, prostitution, etc) then a fine or community service is probably much more effective.

If you want to reform convicts - start teaching them the untaught sciences.

I don't mean tell them to dunk themselves in water to find Jesus, because that won't make any sense, I mean explain to them that they could be more intelligent than what they are.

You don't have your notes with you? Where are you, in prison?

Prison sentences:

1. Lights out!

2. Get in line!

3. You've got 20 minutes to eat and walk in the yard.

4. No visitors for you, today.

Pretty much every time you hit the "post" button.

That just suddenly reminded me...some time ago, I made a drunken posting thread (or something of that nature) for when someone posts something totally wacky. The intent was for a person to quote them wherever they said it and then post it in that thread for the person to see "in the morning." I wonder what ever happened to it.
