One of the biggest reasons for the infrequency of my posts in this forum is because the forums in this section are generally really partisan. What I mean is that they are generally set up with something like: "Obama does something stupid", "The GOP candidates are all insane" or "Fox news is biased". Whilst these are all worth while threads to start as someone who isn't really interested in defending Obama and knows how crazy the GOP candidates are there isn't really much to discuss. So I'm starting this thread and probably others to get political discussions moving in a way that get people to state for themselves what should be done and to defend their own ideas rather than setting people up to defend or attack particular politicians.

So my question for people is what would you change in your countries criminal justice system? Or USAs criminal justice system or criminal justice systems in general? Would you increase sentences for all? let everyone free? Increase/decrease the war on drugs? What about the death penalty?

like my college professor says....this is for the USA by the way.....i would release all the druggies because forking up 49,000 dollars a year to keep one harmless drug user off the street is putting the U.S. in so much debt.....also i would make it so that all murderers get life in prison or death penalty (depending on the states laws on death penalty).....thats about the only thing i would want to change...everything else is pretty ok

I never knew a harmless druggie. I knew plenty of thieves of all sorts, who were drug users. A few wife beaters who were users. The only time a doper is harmless is when he/she is in jail.

you know EVERY drug user...i doubt it....according to FBI statistics there were over 1.6 million arrests in 2010 for drug offenses....i doubt that every user was violent because then the other offenses would have been a lot higher....many arrests are just for simple possession of marijuana....try to do some research before you make a ridiculous comment

well you say that the only time drug users are harmless is when they are locked up....that implies that every drug user is dangerous....the only way to know that is to know every one of them

anywhere from 12% to 19% were on drugs at the time of their crime or was doing the crime to get money for drugs https://bjs.ojp.usdoj.gov/content/dcf/duc.cfm

well it's the older generation like you that put us into this financial crisis...locking up druggies around 49,000 dollars a year for nothing is a big factor....we have lost the war on drugs and should use Portugal's policy on drugs

Meh, I'd probably let the marijuana smokers out, if possession was their only crime, however if the committed another crime while high or to score, it would be a mitigating circumstances to add more time to their sentence. I'd probably add something to the effect of doing that with drinking, as some "drunks" can be just as bad. it just happens their "drug" is legal. marijuana, would be the only one I'd consider letting people out for though.

Id also do away with the death penalty, im not certain it serves as a good enough deterrent and its freaking expensive, not worth it in my opinion.

I'd also like to see the quality and amount of public defenders available increased, money shouldn't be the determiner of a capable lawyer. Not that public defenders are not capable, a lot of times they are overworked due to heavy caseloads, so they can't focus as much on a case. There needs to be a better middle ground than there is now.

De-criminalize drug use. Sell the stuff from pharmacy with required permits. Separate violent criminals from non-violent. Actually rehabilitate instead of warehousing. Put the money spent on prison into getting people back on their feet and into housing.
