Not really, for a couple of reasons. First of all, it's still not the federal government's business to hand teenagers money to make sure they can go to expensive private universities.

Second of all, those $35,000 tuition rates are dramatically inflated, and the federal government is a significant reason for it. Instead of giving poor kids access to quality education, this loan program has led to tuition rates skyrocketing at many times inflation rates while the number of college graduates and the quality of college education has remained stagnant.

There's nothing wrong with state schools. You can get a world class education and become literally anything by going to a state school. I'm going to a state school now, after having gone to a very expensive top-tier private university, and the education I'm receiving is honestly equivalent. I plan on taking this state school degree and going to medical school with it.

You don't have some God-given right to go to Harvard. If you can't convince a bank, alumnus, or other benefactor to give or loan you the money to go to Harvard, then you don't go to Harvard. That's life.

I wanted a lot of things I couldn't afford at 18.

Oh, and I promise you that if Harvard had lots of its carefully selected applicants decline to go because they just couldn't find the money, Harvard would figure something out, such as organizing a bank or banks to give those private loans. Some schools already do this.

I was not aware that in America, a school like Harvard had anything in place other than scholarships to help out students.

I heard something, is it true that tuition in America is based on your ethnicity? I ask because I saw some school was having a bake sale and cookies were say 3$ for white people, 2$ for black people and 2$ for Natives and women and they said it was to show everyone how tuition is based on ethnicity.

In actuality, colleges, banks, and the federal government all work together to ensure you or anybody gets the money you need to go where you want to go, to a reasonable enough degree. This is why it is all done through FAFSA. Go to any college and ask about financial aid of any form, public or private, and they will direct you to the FAFSA website. Same with banks. Ron Paul just wants the federal government out of this collaboration, but I think that he and Jonnythan may be correct in that it would still continue on between universities and the banks in picking up the extra slack, which could mean bringing tuition costs down, if not the state governments as well.

Uhhh. No. That is incredibly absurd. Sounds like they were probably making some political statement concerning the abundance of independent scholarships for ethnic minorities as compared to whites.

It was at Berkley I think.

I cant find the original article but the original one from a few months ago made it seem that different races is different cost for university.

I did not want to highjack the thread but since it was about tuition, I thought I would ask if it was true.

The only thing I can think of if this were true would be affirmative action forcing universities to bring down some costs for minorities to meet quota. Or, like Jonnythan said, scholarships/grants bringing down the average tuition paid by minorities.

Education should be affordable for every person at the same tuition across the board and Government loans should only be made to legalized Citizens and no In State tuition to illegal aliens. Rick Perry lost my vote for this.

That was in protest of a bill being sent to the governor of California that would allow universities to consider race when determining tuition. I believe the governor did sign the bill into law.

For wielding they work during the day and go to school at night 2 nights a week. Four hours each class. They do this for up to 8 years. They must understand math and science IE. How Metals bond and work. A lot of other apprenticeships have you taking a 2 year degree in your field.

Electrical and welding (which I'm sure is what you meant ), yes there is extensive school available, but you can learn the skill on the job.

My husband is an electrician, but they're teaching him how to weld. He's not going to class, they show him how to do it, tell him what to use and he does it. It doesn't make him a certified welder, but he is capable of welding.

Once upon a time, back in the 90's, he was an apprentice electrician. He has taken a few classes, but nowhere near any kind of degree. He would have to take a test to be a Journey level electrician, but he doesn't have to take a class before that test.

Shall I go on?

Just because you can advance your trade by going to school does not mean that it cannot be learned on the job.

Yes, and another one I read from a few months ago, I can't find the link, seemed to imply that for various races, there are various tuition fees.

I am not getting why someone would want to do away with federal student loans for all people but some would have access to programs and scholarships, like myself because I am a woman. That does not seem fair.

No no no. The bill was to allow them to consider race as a factor in admissions. Not tuition.

They don't charge different people different tuition.

So its not tuition? But say we both apply to the same school and there are no federal loans anymore, what if I have access to special funding because I am a girl and this means, say my tuition is now 25,000$ a year and not the 35,000$ a year it was suppose to be for both of us. Is is sort of like having different tuition for me because I am girl is it not? I am just trying to understand how this works.

I am having trouble understanding what you mean by "special funding." I assume you mean scholarships and grants?

If that's the case, scholarships and grants are given by private entities. They are not handled by the government - they are generally done by rich people and charitable organizations. Many are paid out of foundations set up in memory of some rich dead person. For example, there may be some rich dead woman who went to a particular school and studied anthropology, so now there's a Mary Anthropologist Scholarship Fund that gives $2500 a year to some woman majoring in anthropology at that school, and the recipient is selected by a committee set up by the foundation. Or, say, the NAACP has a scholarship fund intended to help poor black kids.

But even with scholarships, your bill is the same. If you and I both enroll at Harvard, we're both going to get a bill for say $42,000. Our tuition and fees will both be the same. If you have scholarships or grants, the scholarships will pay the school in your name.

Private loans either get paid directly to the school or to the student, who can then use the loan for tuition as well as books, food, etc. Many scholarships and loans get paid to the student's account at the school, and any excess money paid out to the student as a refund check.

Exactly what I thought. Affirmative action for admissions, scholarships/grants for tuition help are the reasons some minorities will see an easier expenditure.
