Neither of my kids had a huge problem with it... My youngest never even really took to a pacifier...
Put something that tastes nasty on there, I'd say Tabasco but that's a little much!
How old is the person in question? I say PERSON, because I have a friend my age who did it for a very long time, and still does when she gets really nervous or upset.

Chop it off.

Seriously though...
Is it a child or an adult? My 7yr old stopped sucking her thumb a 1 1/2 ago, but still does it some nights if she had a bad day at school.

All we did, whenever we saw her sucking her thumb, we wouldn't scold her, but just tell her that "Big girls don't do that." Since she REALLY wanted to be 'grown up' like her big sister(there is an 8yr difference), it didn't take her long to stop.

when i was a grade school, one of my teacher used iodine on one of my classmate's thumb that she was sucking on. she tried to sucked on and taste the iodine, it tasted pretty bad. eventually, it took time, the iodine did work, she stopped sucking her thumb. this was back in 70's, when this happened, so i don't know if any mother still use this method now, you can try see what happen!

Embarrassingly, I did it until I was 12. I had a retainer fitted so that it wasn't as comfortable to have my thumb in my mouth. Worked like a charm.

Since I was not allowed to do it, I know little about it but its a comfort thing like a teddy bear or a blanket right? A thing to do for security if scared or nervous? If so, I can understand why its hard to stop. Its hard to give up what provides us comfort.

That's how it was for my 7yr old. She hasn't sucked her thumb in almost 6months now, but she still has her blanket and is only allowed to use it at when she goes to bed.

I was born with my thumb in my mouth - maybe odd, but true. I had to go to the orthodontist for the damage it did to my front teeth (space between.) My parents tried vinegar, lemon etc. All it did was teach me how to wash my hands very well at an early age. (A good lesson, but not what they were after. )

Basically I stopped overnight when my orthodontist told me that I was going to have to wear my headgear until I quit. That did it for me. It was all about the proper motivation for me.

I don't recommend the method I used. I quit sucking my thumb at 13 when I started smoking cigarettes. My parents tried all the standard remedies, but none of them worked. I got no end of harassment from my classmates. Good luck stopping.
