In their latest assault on women’s health, this week House Republicans will take up HR 358, the ironically titled “Protect Life Act.” Opponents have rechristened the measure the “Let Women Die” bill because it would allow hospitals that receive federal funds to turn away a woman seeking an abortion in all circumstances, even if an abortion is necessary to save her life:

Bumping it might help. Things get lost easily around here.

This bill sounds appalling, but I wonder how many hospitals (aside from the 600 Catholic ones) would actually exercise that right if it passed.

And this part:
Quote:
If a hospital is unable to provide what the patient needs — including a life-saving abortion — it has to transfer the patient to a hospital that can.

Does that mean that even if they refuse they'd have to transfer?

I can't see this bill passing.

That bill (if passed) will revive the coat hanger business

I believe that the Women in congress will shoot this one down.

This bill will never pass.

Why bicker over something that isn't even real?

Which brings me back to my first question...I wonder how many hospitals outside of those 600 Catholic ones would refuse to perform abortions.

Of course, I can't really even see this as being so completely devastating...if a woman is pro-choice, she should check out her hospital's policy way in advance.

It actually passed before this thread was even started.

Next time, think twice before you post something like "this will never happen."

Time for Dorky's silly question of the day.

So if I were going to die from childbirth, I am not allowed to choose to have an abortion?

Is this not a violation of the Hippocratic Oath that states a doctor can do no harm, is not harm to allow me to die?

A doctor is in violation of his oath to give me extra morphine if I am dying of cancer but he can allow me to die in childbirth?

The comment about not giving pessary for abortion in the oath has long been removed so the doctor is not in violation of the oath if he provides an abortion.

Not quite like that.

If this bill becomes law, you are allowed to choose to have an abortion to save your life... but the hospital has the right to deny you said abortion.

The statement was for current law- not the one that passed- so NO they will not have to transfer.
That may sound like a minor thing (let the woman check the hospital before.......) but many many states are sparse enough that that is your only hospital. And if it is an emergency the woman risks death jus t because!

That is what Supergirl said! That is exactly how this will play out now in some places & some hospitals.
