What do you do to feel better? What gets your mind off how you feel?

I usually start by clearing my mind, or trying to.. then I'll write and just let the words flow.
If I get writers block or if I just don't feel like writing I'll go for a run which helps get some frustrations out.

Reading is also a good escape for me.

Trying to redirect my thoughts to good memories and images that made me feel good or giddy.

Realizing that no matter what, I'm still a decent person inside and that I deserve to feel good so then getting greedy with reaching for thoughts to help make me feel that way.

Some of the simplest things I keep an memory to help - I was walking through the city awhile back passing a play ground a little girl reached her little fingers through the fence and yelled out, in a very sweet and genuine tone, "I love you."

I thought it was adorable and it is an instance that I often times refer back to.

I have others as well but that's an example.

In the mean time, check this site - it might help to turn your cognition around a little.

What I've noticed about myself, sometimes, Grasshopper is that I often times feel alone and when this happens I will start looking outside of me for some kind of sentiment or compliment but instead get slapped with a remark, that may not have been intended to be mean, but I'll take out of context and it's like getting punched - this results in sending my thoughts down a negative track were I start stacking on more disappointment and anger.

Usually people deal with this in two ways - they'll release by lashing out on someone or they'll hold it inside so as not to hurt anyone with it but holding it in results in anxiety and depression.

The third way is what is currently being demonstrated which is noticing that you've started going down that track and turning the train back around by stopping the process and calling up a good memory or accessing something that is going to make you feel better.

A lot of others out there have practised this so much that they can reach and maintain a peace and feeling of warmth in them that is similar to being drunk.

Try not to get in the habit of meriting anger in yourself towards something or someone ie; "I have all right to be angry." because that anger is what is making you hurt. Instead say "I have all right not to hurt inside like this so I'm going to pick myself up and put myself back on track."

Start by figuring out what has me feeling depressed. If it's something I can change I start thinking of ways to make the changes.
If it is something that comes on a particular date, like an anniversary of a loved ones passing , then I pull out the photos and take a walk down memory lane remembering all the good times and what made them so special and how blessed I was to know them.

Get busy. I clean. De-clutter. Paint. Garden. Wash the car. Go for a long walk. My mind appreciates distraction by menial tasks and the body appreciates the physical exercise.

The worst possible thing is to sit and ruminate. Often during menial activity my mind will work it out. Its a bit like when you stop trying to remember something and then an hour later the answer just pops into your head.

I immerse myself in music or learning usually. I go to gigs or sing or study philosophy, as that usually requires all the brainpower I can muster.

I pull out my photo albums or look on the computer. I know the life that I have lead has been a good one. Whatever the future may bring I am now ready for it. Handling the depression of others has been a bit harder for me to do but I work on that everyday with them.
