My wife is traveling to an animal shelter over 100 miles away to pick up a dog from a city shelter. We always g
keep two dogs around, but the oldest one was put dowm in May.

Does anyone prefer rescuing their pets from shelters, or do you just get your pets from breeders??????

It gives you the feeling that you saved the animal from death.
I think that they appreciate it...........

thats lovely a pooch will be given a second chance at a forever home. i did go to a rescue shelter to see if there was a dog there for to fit my family but sadly they mostly had to go to home without other pets- of which i have a few. the others didnt seem to gel together but it must be a lovely feeling to know you have saved an animal

I think it's always best to try shelters first and make sure those dogs get a good home before checking out the breeders. Though if you want a pedigree dog it may be easier to take the second route.

I hear you brother! I worked at a shelter for a few years and ended up with what my wife says were way too many dogs and cats.

It would be hard to see them, day in and day out. They look pitiful.

Shelters.

One dog though we did buy from a "breeder" They were selling puppies at a public yard sale for $25 each. They were blue heeler/rat terrier mixes. Cute little thing she was. Until she accidently got run over. She was 11 Months old.

I've never got a pet from a shelter. Well, as an adult, I've only had... ***counts on fingers***... Three pets.
But when I was a kid, we ALWAYS had pets. Cats in the neighborhood would find their way to our house, and just end up 'ours.' And then our pets would end up being offspring from our OTHER pets. The dogs, if I remember right, came from my dad's mechanic, lol... or maybe it was just a friend of the family.
MY first dog, the first one I got to call MINE anyway, was hit by a car as a puppy and almost buried til I saw the bag moving in and out.
He was the runt of the litter, and we'd named him Rambo, you know, to boost his self esteem. When he'd got hit, it shattered his pelvis and broke his back leg. I managed to fashion a homemade splint, and we took him to the vet the next day. I was 12 or 13 I think. I took care of him... Helped him outside and held him up with a towel when he had to do his business... Fed him his meds and made sure he was comfy. I had to give him stool softeners for the rest of his life because of his pelvis. And his hind leg didn't work well when he walked and not at all when he ran... He'd RUN and that back leg would just kinda FLAP. Funny and sad at the same time. He slept in my bed with me. He had this thing about knowing when I was really gonna get up and not just hit snooze on the alarm clock. I was 19 or 20 when Mom called me AT WORK to tell me he'd passed.
Specifically wanted a black cat. My friends' cat had black kittens. WOOT! That was about 11 years ago or so. We moved and the cat didn't wanna come! His name was Morpheus.
My cat now I rescued from my young nephew about 7 years ago. He was 4 or 5 and not a very good cat owner. The cat, Ebony, is now my fuzzy middle child.

Hmmmm.... I've gone and babbled all over your journal.

Another post just reminded me of two rats I had in highschool... Mary Jane and Zebastian. How could I forget about them?
