so i have a few questions.
I'm stationed in Germany, and last year i went to London. i took the Euro Tunnel across....and jesus.
i need some tips about driving in England. i was close to causing maybe 20 accidents. the whole left side of the road thing really screwed me up. any pointers?
also, i was wondering where some good Techno and hip hop scenes around the area? the last time me and my boys went, it was more of a "yo, lets ride out to a different country", so there was no planning whatsoever.
oh yea, if anybody wants to kick it when i come through, let me know. always cool to meet some people. | |

| I don't drive so can't really offer you any points aside from stick to the same side of the road that everyone else is using and be very careful when going around roundabouts. Maybe read up on British driving technique before you go, just in case.
If you want that kind of music I would suggest going to places (in London) like Shoreditch and Hackney. Fabric is a popular club that has techno and hip-hop nights (I think).

| | DON'T drive in London, just trust me on this and don't do it! The public transport here is brilliant so you don't need to anyway! If you're driving out of London that's fine, practice in the car park before you go, stay on the slow lane on the motorway etc till you are used to it. One thing I will say that helps is though, we recently went to Italy and my other half had to learn to drive on the other side of the road but we hired a car from Italy so it had left hand drive already, which really helped getting used to it, especially when turning corners, junctions etc. Follow the traffic, be really aware and alert of your surroundings and where your next direction will be, invest in a good sat nav and give way to the right on the roundabout! |

we call them traffic circles. and yes, we have them, just not as much as Europe.

it's something about me that i really hate taking public transit. i dont know, i'm impatient, so when i need to get somewhere, i dont wanna wait, feel me?

Yeah definitely rent a british car, it really helps. Fair enough, but bear in mind most Londoners are scared to drive in central London, it's one of the worlds worst places to drive and the public transport is great, there's tubes to absolutely everywhere and they're generally every 2 minutes - some places are really near to each other as well. If you're going outside of London then you will DEFINITELY need a car, take a look there's some great areas not far away.

Brick Lane is a nice area if you want something that's not too touristy. Brixton is great as well for music, as is Islington/Camden. |

Brick Lane is a nice area if you want something that's not too touristy. Brixton is great as well for music, as is Islington.
Yeah Brick Lane is good for a walk around I agree, it's a nice chilled out arty scene round there and Spitalfields market, Shoreditch and Hoxton are nearby - Shoreditch and Hoxton are great for nights out, especially Zigfrid von Underbelly. Go for a curry on Brick Lane but don't go near the bottom end and don't believe all the awards signs! I went for one right at the top near an archway with a pub bench outside, it was really nice and got a good deal.
Camden is great too, the zoo, Regents Park and Primrose Hill are all nearby (which has a great view over London) but it's more of a rock scene so I don't know if that's your cup of tea. There's great markets, food and atmosphere around there though, I'd recommend giving it a try.
If you're into dance music, Soho and Leicester Square clubs maybe your cup of tea and Brixton is good for hip hop - if you dare! It can be a bit dicey round there sometimes!! The South Bank is great fun, always lots going on there, street performers, the london eye, the imax/bfi cinema, the aquarium, river cruises etc etc. London bridge has the london dungeons and a couple similar things. Madame Tussauds is near Baker St and is also great fun.
Hampstead Heath or Hyde Park are best parks - you can do stuff like pedalo boats, swimming in the lido, horeriding, rollerblading etc here, Holland Park in West London is very pretty but only for a walk around. If you get a sunny day while over having a picnic in the park is the best! Sometimes in the bandstands at Hampstead Heath they have live music on too.
You can go on a duckmarine or open top bus tour or you can download tours for free off the internet, if you don't know London very well though I'd recommend an organised tour. There's also good old trafalgar square, buckingham palace, covent garden, oxford street (shopping) etc etc...
There's SOOO much to do so I agree with you, plan it beforehand, have a look on the internet and find out what you prefer, the website I posted is good so is the Time Out London website. Also, check out 2 for 1 deals on the internet as some of the paid attractions are expensive and there's a lot going around at the moment because it's summer - I never visit anywhere without a 2 for 1 deal! If you can come during the week, it's a less busy then - weekends in the summer get rammed in the touristy spots!
And finally if you get chance to venture out of London visit Cambridge, Oxford or Stratford Upon Avon (not to be confused with plain old Stratford - VERY different places!!), they're not too far to drive and really lovely interesting places. Get all that?  Have fun!  |
