Michele Bachmann has drawn some media flack about her views on the minimum wage.

She has said that the minimum wage is a bad idea and that getting rid of it would bolster employment.

Despite a considerable body of academic literature and a whole lot of common sense that supports Bachmann’s view, some reporters seem to have a hard time with it.

IMO the minimum wage law is as harmful to America's job market and employment as labor unions have become. Get rid of the minimum wage.

Yes because paying people less than what their living needs are is the greatest idea in the history of middle earth.

And let's not forget the concept that capitalism is self regulating.

It amazes me. We make policies to transfer wealth from the poor to the rich and it's "good for society". We make policies that could transfer wealth from the rich to the poor and it's "bad for society". It makes me honestly wonder when the hell we turned into George Orwell's 1984.

Minimum wage jobs are not meant to support a family on, even though some people are trying to do just that. Then they scream for higher minimum wages which can only mean even fewer jobs.

So you would rather see people living with less money? Surely these people would then have to claim for other such benifits like child support and such.

Stripping the rich to relieve the poor wouldn't create jobs any more than Obama's handout did.

A lot of Americans ARE living with less money because there are no jobs.

And stripping the poor to give it to the rich certainly has lost jobs, decreased the standard of living and created all sorts of havoc.

You can be as "sincere" as you want in thinking that it's bad to have living wage jobs in an atmosphere of corporate welfare. However you'd be full of s***.

It's amazing how you have summarily dismissed over 40 years of economic reality and bought hook, line and sinker into the concept of corporate welfare. You should be entirely ashamed of yourself.

"While economists don’t all agree, the bulk of research points to only small potential job gains—if any—from a suspension of the minimum wage. In a 2000 survey of 308 academic economists, just under half agreed fully that the minimum wage increases unemployment among “young and unskilled workers.” The rest agreed with that statement with provisos or not at all."

" Even if the minimum wage does keep some low-skilled workers out of the market, eliminating the wage floor doesn’t look like an important way to spur job growth."

I really think money should be spent encouraging small business growth. Think about it. Nearly every business in America started out small. Henry Ford did. At one time there were hundreds of brands of vehicles available, many built in barns one at a time.
We could get back to that concept, maybe not with vehicles, but with other items people need and use.

That's an excellent concept.. Obama put that forward two years in a row, and it was shot down by the conservatives both times.

You see, small businesses don't make big campaign contributions.

But, wouldn't the reverse hold equally true?

If for instance, we reduce minimum wages to increase the amount of jobs, what good will that do? If we reduce minimum wage, or get rid of it, and people 'are not meant to support a family on' minimum wage jobs, then reducing payment of these jobs that people are currently relying on will force these people back into the job market to look for more jobs to offset the lessened amount of money they are receiving per paycheck.

If we measure the amount of jobs as equal to the amount of money saved, (since this model makes no sense otherwise) then the job market should, theoretically, see little to no change in the ratio between people with jobs and people without.

Of course, if that does not end up being the case, and still assuming that amount of money saved = jobs created, then that would mean that more people have jobs that you can't support a family on, resulting in a higher number of people below the poverty line.
