I ask this because while I am a supporter of human rights and a subset of that, women rights, I can't say I fully associate myself with the feminism movement because I don't agree with some of the theories they use, and don't agree with the ways they go about reaching their goals.

But i'm not sure if that too is a skewed perspective. I actually though that I was a feminist for a long time but the more women studies, gender classes, feminism, womanism classes I took, the more I disagree with certain things.

I cannot even fully define feminism anymore because they are so many subsets. Post-feminism, first-wave feminism, second-wave feminism.

So I guess my question is do you consider yourself a feminist? Why or why not?

And also, define feminism in your view.

Or do you believe in something else like humanism, womanism, equalism?

Or are you just one of those that says they believe in equal rights and that's it.

Or something else?

I think that feminism is victim to the same issues that religion is. Some of them use odd tactics or have beliefs that are so far removed from the basic message that the whole thing gets a bad reputation.

I believe that women and men should have the same rights and opportunities. If a woman wants to be a housewife and mother instead of working outside the home, she should have that choice. Likewise, if a man is more into being a 'househusband' and raising kids while his wife is out working, he should have that opportunity.

I guess I'd have to say I'm on of those "equal rights and that's it" people.

I'm a feminist, but not a militant one. My version of feminism is that women should be treated with respect, just as men and transgender people should. I think that society has come a long way since the days of the suffragette's, but there's still unequal pay and still negative stereotypes (can't think of the correct term) about, so there's more to be done. I think things like the Slutwalk are a good example of that.

I hate the type of feminist that suggests that women are better than men, they're completely missing the point in the first place. Feminism is about bringing the status of females up to that of men and transgender people, not about becoming superior and further unbalancing the scales.

I dunno, I always thought I was because I believe in complete equality of the genders, even going so far as to favour positive discrimination in certain situations, but since actually meeting people who are feminists I've found I disagree with them on an awful lot.

Dunno, I believe in equality.

I believe in equality, but I'm not a feminist by a long shot. Most feminists piss me off with their veiwpoints.

Incidentally, I'm still fighting for the first right and it's with my old world people that believe that a girl should stay home instead of go out and do what they want. It's especially difficult fighting for this right when its women who are telling you to stay home.

But yeah... those extreme feminist really o give a bad name.

I think what Pleb's is getting at is that women shouldn't have to go out and work in order for feminism to "win".

I think I've mentioned it before but it always makes me think of the Family Guy scene where Lois is arguing with Gloria Ironbachs about why she doesn't work outside the home. Feminism is about choice.

Exactly! I would rather die than be a SAHM..but for women who want that..hey more power to them. Financially I think women screw themselves over, especially when it comes time to retire and if they divorce before retirement.

Yeah...I think it's possible to do both if you want. My mom-in-law has never had a job in her life and afaik they don't have any retirement lined up. There's no way they're getting a divorce, but she thinks that when Dad dies that she's just going to have to sell all of his stuff to survive. I don't think she has any idea how survivor's benefits work.
