"This week it was revealed that Speaker John Boehner is using taxpayer money to pay for private lawyers to defend the constitutionality of the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA), the law that prohibits the federal government from recognizing same-sex marriages and defines marriage as a union between a man and a woman."

Tell him not to use your tax dollars for this.

And what a hypocrit... We need to cut the budget, unless of course it means scoring points with his constituents, then the sky is the limit on how much of our money he'll spend.

I'm pretty stunned.. It's been over a day and not a single conservative has had anything to say about this.

Hmmmm.... Wonder what that means?

Is marriage included in the US constitution?

Subject: Tell Speaker Boehner: Don't defend the unconstitutional Defense of Marriage Act with our money.

Dear Friend,

It's outrageous that Speaker John Boehner is using taxpayer money to pay for private lawyers to defend the constitutionality of the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA), the law that prohibits the federal government from recognizing same-sex marriages and defines marriage as a union between a man and a woman.

And not only is Speaker Boehner using our money to defend discrimination against gay and lesbian couples, he's hired Bush's former solicitor general to work on the case.

This is nothing more than rank hypocrisy from a politician who keeps on telling us that our country is too broke to pay for vital government services, but sees no problem using our money to score cheap political points.

I just signed a petition telling Speaker Boehner not to use taxpayer money to pay for his defense of the Defense of Marriage Act. I hope you'll sign it too.

You can find out more and take action at the link below.

Wanted to bump this, as it's now become a hot button issue, mostly because Obama has publicly come out in favor of legalizing same sex marriage.

Republicans in congress have so far spent $750,000,000 dollars in legal fees across the country to fight marriage equality.

This means that the speaker of the house is taking money from taxpayers, that is not appropriated, and using it to push his own political agenda on the state level.

I don't believe this is either constitutional, or legal. It is certainly not ethical.

So government waste of taxpayer funds is okay as long as it is in line with your religious/personal philosophies?

I guess so.. and not just chump change... 3/4ths of a billion dollars so far.

That's twice as much as the budget for Planned Parenthood.
That's six times as much as the budget for the National Endowment for the Arts.

I'm guessing that it's the republican version of the "stimulus"..

Take a bunch of taxpayer dollars, and give it to your rich lawyer friends, to defend something that will ultimately fail.
