One of my flatmates is doing a degree in Photography and while I was in a bad mood over the levels of noise he creates in our flat, I said to another of my flatmates "oh he does a stupid degree anyway, like f*** he has exams; he doesn't care if other people do."

Then that kinda got me thinking, what degrees do you guys consider to be a waste of time or "Mickey Mouse"?

I can only answer from personal opinion. Because all degrees have a point. Even the guy who did one in surfing.

SO personally I think feminism, womens studies, psychology, art, drama and japanese are all a total waste of time

Perhaps I should have said "waste of time" rather than "pointless"...

None personally. I think education for educations sake is a really good thing and that if people are doing things they enjoy but aren't particularly useful on the job market then it doesn't make it any less important than practical degrees like engineering.

Photography isn't a mickey mouse degree at all. Infact it's one of the few degrees that actually makes sense, in that you actually use what you learn once you've finished uni in order to go into a job. I can't see many people using history in the real world unless they were to go on to become historians or sociologists. It is very technical as well, my friend tried explaining it to me once and it seems very complicated

I'm not sure about actual mickey mouse degrees though.I do know that War Studies is supposed to be quite popular for some reason, I can't quite see what use that would be outside of university.

War Studies? That exists?

Also yeh I'm aware of that about Photography it was more a comment I made without thinking because I was pissed off at him I just used it as an example for the thread.

Media studies is about the technical side of media and can be very useful if you want to go into a career in the media industry. Not just for experience but also for connections and it allows you to build up a portfolio which gets your mind set on the kind of things that may be desired by media companies.

In saying that, it does seem easy to go into that industry without having a media degree, but even so I wouldn't quite call it a waste of time.

Yeah it's oversubscribed at King's apparently because it's so popular. There's another one called Peace Studies as well, it all seems very odd.

I did a module in Peace and Conflict as part of my politics degree. It was quite interesting. I think it's involved for people who do International Relations as well.
