A controversial new bill is being proposed in the near future that could see to reform the child maintenance system and aim to act as a deterrent for couples wishing to separate.

What do you make of it?

I like that they're trying to improve the child maintenance system, but it does get me thinking about whether the Government has the right to interfere in such a personal matter as this. The monetary side of it makes sense, but the fees just seem like another way to bring money into the economy at the cost of giving people the free 'choice' of whether or not to stay in their marriage. It just seems really manipulative to me, slightly worrying. The article also raises the issue of women in abusive relationships too which I found quite interesting.

Hmmm... Idk. I guess it would prevent a petty divorce, like: "Oh, we can't agree on what house to buy, in what city, ect."

But then again, I don't like a lot of governmental interference..

I was in an abusive marriage. no kids, but it would have been way harder for me to get out if I had to pay a fee.
That is just nuts.

I dunno, it's similar to when they released plans to create financial incentives for parents to marry one another. It's discriminatory and the media had a field day about it, hence why they changed their minds.

As far as I can tell this is the same thing done backwards.

The biggest problem I have is that most lone parent families are from the lower income levels. Simple fact is the highest amount of single parents are from poor demographics and the highest rates of divorce are from the poorer demographics. Once again it discriminates against the poorest.

To be quite frank I don't think they are trying to improve the child maintenance system, I think they are trying to save money and give incentives for people to live in Nuclear conservative (soft 'C') families. Simple fact is child benefits were one thing we got right in 1997, that model should be maintained, repeated and continually funded.

It would be interesting to know how much this 'fee' is. A large proportion of people who file claims with the CSA are single parents who are already unemployed as it is mandatory to do so before getting any government help. So are we expecting the single parents to pay this fee if their claim is successful? That seems to make no sense as they are already on the breadline.
Also If man decides to leave woman or vice versa and the other party gets no say in that decision are they still liable for the fee?

I'm really tired and I can't get my head around this but it seems really ill conceived to me as it's only the people who agree to be responsible and pay their dues that are going to get stung by this because it says something about 'when an agreement is made, then the fee is applicable Only when policed by the state'. Actually although they talk the talk the CSA doesn't really go after the non payers as millions of women will testify to!

I would like to see more levy's placed on the CSA to chase the non payers and also for holding onto cash when they do receive it. It is not unusual for the CSA to hold onto parents money for months and years at a time.

Sorry if non of the above makes sense..I need sleep!

They don't even tell them how much the fee is until the end of the process? No way! This is just wrong, for all the reason's already stated. I mean I guess I understand that services of virtually any kind are generally paid for, but to figure out a child's destiny? Come on!
