I remember a couple about a decade ago when people would bang pots and pans to welcome the new year in.

This year I heard no pots and pans banging. I heard no one yelling "Happy New Year" from their doorways.

Is this tradition a thing of the past?

BTW --- In my neighbourhood, the people are just not the type of people who go out and bang pots and pans. It is no great loss. I suppose it is not only me who is distancing myself from my neighbours.

I was making all kinds of noise and smoke with my fire works...expensive but fun!

Where I come from folks would fire their guns in the air at the stroke of midnight.

Yeah we do that in my neighbourhood. It was traditionally done to scare off the evil spirits and ensure a more positive new year. That and it's fun

It was quite round here this new year, with the exception of a few fireworks at midnight I never heard a peep.

In Britain in the new year, we get drunk, dance around, sing badly and let off fireworks. Pretty much the same as we do during any notable occasion.
I like the banging pots and pans idea, maybe it could catch on over here!

I thought it was originally a British thing? We've been doing it for as long as I can remember.

You West Country folk must be a bit more superstitious than us Northerners!

I think pots and pans have been replaced with fireworks. This is what seems to have happened in my village.

It is interesting that some people have never heard of this tradition.

In Pittsburgh Pennsylvania, everyone in the neighborhood would come outside at midnight to bang on pots and pans yelling "Happy New Year!" My friends in Pittsburgh say th
at they still do it.
