Okay, 5 IS a bit young. But if the school is close by, I don't see the big deal.

Kids have been walking to school since forever! At that age and younger.
This mom isn't neglectful.

Depends on the neighborhood, location and maturity of the kid.

I wouldn't want my 5 year old walking nearly a mile to school alone.

If it was a close enough to watch them from the house then I would let them, but any further and I'd want them going with an adult I trusted.

There is no way in hell I would have allowed my children to walk a mile to school on their own, my children were taken to school up until they started high school at 11 years old, a five year old is not responsible enough.

If the child had ended up under a lorry on the way to school, the mother would never have forgiven herself.
In the UK a five year old has just left nursery and started school. Young kids are not clued up about the dangers of traffic and are trusting of adults who may be out to abuse that child.

If there was a group of them and the school wasn't too far away I cannot see any problem.

Going to and from school with my mates was the one of the highlights of the school day.Not only does it give the kids who have been cooped up in a classroom some well needed exercise but it can teach them social skills also.

What do the majority of kids do now when they get home from school? ,homework?,Computer or TV?.Children NEED to be let out of the house more and not be given lifts everywhere. And yes I'm talking about 5 yr olds.

Reminds me of a true story. When my mom and her sister were schoolgirls, they walked near a mile to school. They often took a "shortcut" through a small hobo camp. It saved them quite a few blocks. Mom overheard a bum ask another who those lil' gals were. The other bum answered, "those are Bugs S------f's daughters. Don't mess with 'em".
My grandad's nickname was "bugs". He was a well known barroom brawler in those days in my town. When my dad went off to fight in WW2, he helped raise me. People saw us together so much that I was nicknamed "lil' bugs".

You sure that's why you got the nickname?

I don't think it's neglect. Maybe poor judgment.

After reading it.. I don't think it's either.. I think she's just a victim of poor circumstances..

She fought like crazy to keep her childs bus route, and was denied. Then she fought to allow him to walk to a different route so he wouldn't have to cross the two busy streets, and as denied..

A neglectful mother, or one with poor judgment wouldn't do all that fighting with the school board if she had another option.
