ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. -- The author of a self-published how-to guide for pedophiles that was pulled from Amazon.com last month after widespread outrage has been arrested on obscenity charges.

Phillip Ray Greaves, a 47-year-old retired nurse's aide in Pueblo, Colo., was arrested at his home by sheriff's deputies from Florida's Polk County and charged with violating Florida's obscenity law.

Polk County Sheriff Grady Judd said his office was able to arrest Greaves on Florida charges because Greaves sold and mailed his book -- "The Pedophile's Guide to Love and Pleasure: a Child-lover's Code of Conduct" -- directly to undercover Polk deputies. Greaves even signed the book, Judd said.

"He very proudly sold us his personal copy," Judd told The Associated Press. "I was outraged by the content. It was clearly a manifesto on how to sexually batter children ... You just can't believe how absolutely disgusting it was."

So, this guy got arrested for mailing his book to an undercover officer in Florida, thereby (the police station) basically coerces this guy to sell his book to them, just so they can arrest him?

So apparently, this guy got arrested for mailing his book to someone in Florida.

That is the weirdest thing ever considering that he was a free man in Colorado.

I'm looking up Florida's obscenity law's right now.

But...i wonder if something like Hitler's Mein Kampf or "A witches guide to sorcery and torture" could ever fall into this category.

And on a completely side note...I love how FOX news' logo has the words "fair and balanced" at the bottom. It made me lol.

Why did the guy write this? What did he think was going to happen? It was hardly likely to make him popular with society in general and was always going mean the authorities would at the very least cause him as much inconvenience as possible. Bloody weirdo. And how did he manage to get it on Amazon?

if I remember right you can't legally mail any type of porn/adult content or material through the USPS. If you want to send it you have to use UPS or FedEX.

Im not sure if that is what is coming to play in this case or how it works across state lines.

There was another thread about this on here, I forget by who and what the title was, I do remember stating that I would not be surprised of the author violated US obscenity laws.

In answer to your question, I was under the impression that obscenity laws in US deals only with things that are sexual in nature and would not have anything to do with a book about torture, like the book you mention. I could be wrong on that, but that was my understanding of this law.

They apply the Miller test and this is why in one state it can be acceptable and in one state be declared violating the obscenity law. The miller test has three parts.

1. does the work lack scientific, political, literary or artistic value
2. does the work describe in an offensive way, sexual explicit conduct defined by state law and finally
3. average person in community find the work appealing to prurient interest.

Based on this, the book could be fine in Colorado but not okay in Florida.

And presumably there is also a company out there that was happy to print it.

I'm quite happy with him being arrested for this. I think that issuing a guide is akin to encouraging it and encouraging illegal activity should be illegal itself in my opinion.

I've not read the content so can't actually comment on whether the guide was encouraging it or not, but if it is a guide on that sort of thing it sounds like it would be encouraging it.

I had no idea about obscenity laws before I watched this on CNN. Once I found out what it was, it was only a matter of time before a state deemed it violated that law.

Usually when one state deems it violates this law, it sets wheels in motion and other states will follow suit. He might not be in trouble in Colorado but if every other state agrees it violated this law, he can't mail the book, have it on internet so people in those states can view it and goodbye to that God awful book.

Its not even about my morals as there are books I might not morally agree with, its about the law and one should not be allowed to sell a book that is a guide to molesting innocent children.

What got me was OJ wrote a book, If I Did It, or something like that and there was pubic outcry. The book got banned right away. But a book on basically how to molest kids and it can be sold? Something here is just not right.

Do you think the Anarchist's Cookbook should be banned?

"If I did it", isn't really banned though.

Many books stores won't carry (as to not piss people off) it but you can get it special order. Same with libraries, sure most will not have it, but if there is one out there some where, they will lend it.

Both books may be pieces of trash not worth wiping your butt on, but its hard to actually truly ban something. Though obscenity laws might be their best bet, but still there may be copies out there. I think that might be why they went after him once the item was mailed. (vs the amazon self publishing/selling thingy). And it was due to public outcry that Amazon pulled it. They didn't want to piss their customers off, rather than the content was illegal.

**I don't know, nor do I want to know, if the actual content is illegal. I don't want to read the book. but I am assuming, it is borderline material, that is offensive, but not sure if it is enough to be criminal. Just based on if if were way past that criminal line, he would have been arrested/charged or convicted sooner.
