My mom brings it up a lot that she believes some people like the homeless lifestyle and don't have the desire to be a "productive member of society".

I guess I can udnerstand that, but if that's the case, is it okay for them to ask for money or go to soup kitchens?
I feel like that's ripping off the people who didn't chose that lifestyle.

I liked being homeless. (But I was still productive and had a job too.)

It's just fun living out of your car. I can see some people actually wanting it.

I'm betting that they don't want to be penniless and starving in the gutters though. That's different than just homeless.

I used to know quite a few homeless people and some of them loved 'streetlife',something different and new most days.

Most of them had somewhere to sleep at night i.e homeless shelters (if they could get in) and flats they could crash at when they wanted.

I also found that a lot of beggars had their own accomodation and were usually junkies.

I have known a person who was homeless by choice, but your real question was "is it ripping of the people who aren't there by choice?"...

I suppose it sort of is, depending on exactly what they do while they're homeless. I keep imagining some sort of alternative system where 'homeless' people live in a type of commune and actually provide a service in exchange for room and board...sort of like a farm hand.

I'd have to imagine that those people wouldn't want to live there either though.

What about the people who get pregnant to live off welfare or lie about their circumstances. I think that is more ripping off the people and the govt, than some guy wanting some soup.

I'd imagine some do. It's got to be 'freeing' in ways that you'd never think...no one keeping tabs, track of you and such.

Except for the police in some cases.

Compared to what homelife would be like for some of them then yeah I think living on the streets is preferable.

Maybe if the government made an honest attempt to completely end homelessness then we wouldn't be faced with these 'difficult' moral dilemmas.

You are under no moral obligation to give anyone money, if people really want to be homeless then so be it. As it happens I think the fact we have so many people who are homeless through circumstance, not choice, is horrible and a terrible indictment of our society that we allow it to happen.

Until about six months ago we were well on target to eradicate homelessness in Scotland, then when our budget got cut guess what the first thing to suffer was? Yep, homelessness. Now there are more homeless people in Scotland this Christmas than there was last Christmas after ten years of it decreasing.

Sorry. I ranted a little.

I know that in the UK (or at least this used to be the law) if you don't have an address you are not entitled to benefits.

It is easy to say..well use someone elses address, but that way the council or gov can find out if you are paying (or in this case) not paying council tax. Then the person whose house/flat you are meant to be staying with can end up lumbered with the bill,as they are meant to declare people who live with them.

I am fairly certain what I have put is correct,or at least it was 10 yrs ago.

I don't think people WANT to be homeless. It's always nice to come back to a place at the end of the day where you can just be you... But I think homeless people are generally very wise if they're not drunks or junkies or whatever... For example, there's a homeless man that lives on the street of my uni. I've never seen him drink or do anything that would be concerning. He just walks around, talking to himself, sitting on the grass and watching people pass. I wish I could know what he was thinking...

Being homeless is very liberating fact!

As for using soup kitchens vs begging, they don't go hand in hand.

Some will use the soup kitchens and some will beg and yet some use both.

Never generalize about homeless people. We never know the whole of why they are where they are and we should maybe envy them for their ability to have a little freedom from society and perhaps give with a giving heart to feed and cloth them.

If there's anyone or thing I'm disappointed with is the Governments that 'pretend' they are doing all they can do eliminate this problem, not the citizens whom give to the homeless with gladness and not feel it's their burden. If anyone feels they are a burden, then don't help them in any way.

My motto is 'Be very careful how you judge people' in these types of situations because you may have to walk their 'walk of shame' as such people 'think' is shameful one day themselves.

I've seen this very thing backfire on many people that were very judgmental on many issues of 'poverty' and I can tell you that when it did happen to them they were reeling from how little they knew about 'LIFE' and experiencing it first hand.
