The people who think of suicide as a way to 'get back' at others are the ones who generally don't go through with it, from what I've seen. The ones who are serious, the ones whose bodies wind up being found the next day, are for the most part the people who are in situations that are so unbearable that they literally can see no way out of it. It's not so much that they want to die, as much as that they can't endure the pain of living.

So it's rage vs despair...the first is more likely to go on living than the second.

Just my p.o.v., I'm just me, no initials after my name. I've tried suicide, and am glad it failed, but I still battle the impulse to look to that as a solution when my life turns to crap. I've been successful (duh) but then again, my situation isn't unbearable anymore.

i know of a man that shot himself when he was 17 years old

he did not die, and realized as the shot entered that he did not really want to
die

he got a chronic disease from the blood trnsfusions that saved his life, almost
30 years ago

now, he has some serious problems even though he wants to live and thrive

all things pass, even strong feelings of sadness

yes, they may return... befriend them and see what wisdom they can share
with you

That's the best post I have read on this thread yet.

One warning sign is that the "person" is self-centered.
Another is if they speak in absolutes... "everything", "everybody", "all the time", "everywhere"...etc when speaking their "issues".

Isolation is a key item also.

So, if you know someone that's talking about "me, me, me, everywhere, all the time, then hides out, go look for them and reach out.

you state "One warning sign is that the "person" is self-centred"

We had better keep an eye on at least half of the population then.

I think that some do, although the ones that are seeking attention, rarely carry it through, or tend to make a phone-call before taking an overdose. they know that the person on the line will phone for an ambulance. Some of them die, or do major damage to their organs but survive, at least for a while anyway.

The ones that really do mean to do it, rarely tell anyone. I have had a couple of personal experiences of acquaintances that fall into this category.

Many people that are thinking of committing suicide don't really want to do it, but feel like a burden on everyone so they want to take that pain away from those they love which is not self-centered at all.

No matter which way you want to cut it, suicide is not a situation to be trying to guess what motive is behind the words.

In my opinion if someones mentions 'suicide' always err on the side of caution or live with the consequence of mis- diagnosing your thinking as to why they are wanting to do it. What's not important to you may mean the difference to them and their decision.

I agree that the burden aspect is the case for some people who are contemplating suicide, although it is actually only a small percentage.

Some feel that they are in a situation with no way out. I think that there is always an alternative solution but the person cant see it at the time.

Some feel that their lives are empty because their partner has died or their marriage has failed.

Younger persons may do it because they have failed their exams, or they are being bullied, or have split with their boy or girlfriend.

Finally, some do it because they feel unloved.

I know 4 people that have committed suicide and all had different reasons behind them.

It's really hard to say what will bring someone to that point.

What may bring one to suicide may not phase another, so I take every cry seriously.

In my opinion there are many underlying reasons for someone to want to end their lives and probably even some we don't even know because they have done it without anyone even noticing any signs.

There's much to learn about it and so little to actually know to study it to any solid degree where we can get to actually pick up on the signs if any.

Very in-depth topic and some we haven't even tapped into.

Unless there has been previous unsuccessful attempts , there is no way to know . Unless as the poster that was lucky enough to find the pills and brave and loving enough to ask point blank .

Someone who is serious ,does not swallow the bottle of pills and immediately pick up the phone to call some one who cares. Or load the gun and make a call.
There are as many different 'signs' as there different people .
I have personally known 4 people who was successful the first time they decided to end their lives. And one that is still living but has 3 unsuccessful attempts to his credit

One was very depressed over a recent divorce and losing her children because the ex husband used her diabetics as grounds for taking the kids away from her.
She was going gung ho in an attempt to fight the ex .
She had just hired a new lawyer just a few weeks before and seemed full of hope that she could get shared custody at least. Then one afternoon , she was found dead of an overdose in her bed with a note on the pillow . It was a loving good bye to her kids. no reason , no excuses just her telling her kids good bye. Two months later one of her kids was found dead in the garage where he had hung himself. They were both family members of mine.
A friend who had a pretty wife and two beautiful children lost his job one day because of layoffs and down sizing in the company . He came home sat down in his favorite chair and blew his head apart with his shotgun. His wife and kids came home to find his mess.
Another guy who was popular with several good friends, he was active in the volunteer fire department . Had a beautiful 3 year old daughter who was the be all and end all in his life. His girlfriend cheated on him . Without a word to anyone he picked up a pistol and killed himself.
I know another guy who has been unsuccessful three times . His face is so disfigured he is almost unrecognizable as a human .
even the one that is a bad shot never said any thing leading up to moment he attempted to end his life. and the 4 successful ones , the only signs or clues they showed was their dead bodies .

I think that these issues are important issues concerning society.

I have enjoyed this post because it has been non-intellectual in terms of eminent professor bla bla (LINK) etc etc. I much prefer and get more out of personal experiences.

I've had suicide in my life too. The worst part about it, is each one I knew had a bright future and had many people who loved them for who they were.

I don't think they realize how much it hurts others' as well.

Yep, I new someone who's wife had died of an illness (he had really loved her) and it took him a while to get into a new relationship. He had two young children from his first relationship. He was a really lovely guy and everything was going well when his new girlfriend said that she was ending the relationship because he was boring. He went to the park where he often played with his kids and hung himself. It was such a shock and so very sad, especially for the children.

It's very hard to come to grips with and start the healing process for the ones left hee after the passing of a loved one or friend who has taken their own life . It's all the unanswered questions and the only one with any answers is no longer talking .

Does anyone know if there's a connection between the way people kill themselves and their thoughts?

For example if someone was a step off a building it could be that their looking to let go.

Or if they try to drown themselves then something / someone is missing from their lives?

I myself have been in the very dark place where the impulse came over me however my friend walked by and stopped my intentions. Ever since then I've wondered because my thoughts before that had involved an overdose of insullin but at that moment that was the last thing on my mind. just wondering what your thoughts are.
