Are they going too far?

I just saw one that had a disclaimer before the ad. The disclaimer basically says "this ad might be disturbing, but federal law requires that we show it." The entire ad is pictures of aborted fetuses. I get it that the woman is against abortion, but is it really necessary to show VERY graphic photographs to get that across?

I don't normally get into political discussions, but I'm really disturbed by this ad.

Political ads in America absolutely fascinated me when I was over there. I just couldn't believe that an advert on regular tv would be so overtly biased for a political belief, some of them were faceless rants against Republicans or Democrats by people who weren't running before you would get the line at the end saying (I was there in 2003) 'This advert is endorsed by John Kerry/George Bush'.

I couldn't believe they would chose to have their name associated with such dirty, personally offensive, adverts.

Another thing that stuns me is the money spent on these huge campaigns in American politics. Apparently the amount spent by one candidate in California is already 10 times the amount spent by all three of our largest parties for our entire recent election. It's quite astonishing.

At least they showed the warning, although who would have time to shield their kids against such bulls***?...Such ads should be mailed to HEAD OF HOUSEHOLD, instead of being shown on network TV. It is disturbing and kids should not be exposed to it!

Information is good, but plain NASTY mudslinging?...no place for it on TV!

There is no federal law that states they have to show ANY ads at all!!!

I didn't think so, but the disclaimer said federal law requires that they show it. My mom said she saw something on the news about it being "required" because it's part of her campaign. I need to look it up though.

I think it's disgusting and unnecessary.

I'm getting to the point where I feel all political ads are an abuse of free speech. I know, a bit of an exaggeration, but as a person on the receiving end of them I'm getting quite fed up. Robo-calls, TV ads, radio ads, flyers in my mail box, emails in my in-box. They just can't be escaped. They're everywhere.

I'm beginning to feel like the only legitimate political advertising is with lawn signs - the ones people pay for in support of their candidate and put in their yards. The rest is just overkill.

Okay, here are a couple of links I found that indicate that because it's campaign related, they have to show the ads unedited.

Missy Smith Releases Shocking Pro-Life Ads as Part of Congressional Campaign - says "In opposition to the usual media "blackout" regarding the babies, the laws regulating campaign ads allow for the candidate to show the graphic images."

Help fund pro-life congressional candidate?s graphic abortion ads - says "Federal law mandates network stations must air candidate?s ads unedited."

How Dumb Is The Graphic Missy Smith Fetus Ad? - is more about the fact that people think the ads will back fire on her.

Those are the 3 I found quickly through google. I'm sure there are more out there though.

most of the political ads don't even touch on the issues. it's ridiculous that you have to search for how some politicians feel about some issues. it's all just mudslinging

What's truly astonishing is that there is no law regarding the honesty of political ads. They aren't required to be honest. They could literally run ads saying something along the lines that there is evidence that their opponent is a baby killer and could get away with it. We have truth in advertising laws for products and services but not for politicians.

Oh my god.
I just watched the abortion ad.. That is deeply disturbing.

I'm pro-choice myself (with restrictions) but honestly, she's portraying it as baby killing, and using the shock factor to get people on her side.
Instead I'm so disgusted I want to strangle the b****. Putting that on TV is not necessary, not required by any law.

If this were in the abortion thread, I'd ask what people expect that aborted fetus's look like. It's a reality that they are humans in early development being aborted; people should be made aware of that visually. Not all are, and many block it out.

But being that it's in the politics section and these are her campaign ads only meant to shock and promote herself, it's definately biased overkill.

Can anyone find a link to that political ad?
I'm curious... I would love to see just how terrible this ad really is.

Yes. This.

I hate political commercials because all they are is "This person does this...you should vote for me" Without ever saying what 'me' would do for 'us'? WTH? Are they campaigning on what we don't want?

I don't care for political signage either, they tell you nothing about the candidate, just that they're out there. We have enough crap distracting drivers from driving without trying to read a sign that doesn't tell you anything. I see them as a legal form of vandalism...especially since they're left up so long after election day.

I remember when we only got Canadian TV and we were seeing political ads for their presidential election. They were so nice in comparison to the US ads.
