Today will be 2 weeks since I broke out in hives from what I am sure to be from Tide Coldwater - it's terrible! It started out with a very itchy scalp and then spread to my face, neck, and torso with a few on my feet and legs. I am now in the process of rewashing everything in all-natural detergent for the second time in hopes they will go away completely. I read many articles about detergent residue and how it can take several washes (in hot water with double rinsing) to get it off your clothes, towels and sheets. There are way too many chemicals in our products, and I have read countless stories online of reactions to concentrated or heavily scented detergents. One helpful tip I read was to clean your washing machine with 3 cups of distilled vinegar and 1/2 cup of baking soda to get rid of the residue in the machine - and also wipe the inside of your dryer (after spraying with vinegar and water) and also your mattress and anything else that has come into contact with your clothes (couch, car, etc). If this doesn't work for me then I will try to see if new clothes and sheets help!

Never had a reaction to Purex, it is my preferred brand but the 3 in 1 sheets is a whole different story, I broke out in hives all over my face and neck to the point where the swelling was impairing my vision. Even after a visit to the doctor and a taking the prescribed antihistamine, it was three days before I looked even remotely normal

I have had allergic reaction to detergents but never to one that was for people who are allergic. I have used the Purex Free before and never had a problem. Regular Tide is the worst.

Why do people equate "natural" to "unable to cause any harm to anything"?

People have allergic reactions to "natural" things all the time. That's what allergies are. Peanuts? Pollen? Mold? Dogs?

"All natural" doesn't mean "good" or "flawless" or "hypoallergenic."

I Started using Purex 3 in 1 sheets about 2 weeks ago and one week after using them I started to break out in hives. I thought is was the medication that I was taking so my doctor told me to stop taking the medicine and I did just that but everday after I stop taking the meds I have been breaking out in hives on be arm, feet and stomach so I knew it wasnt the medication, but had to start taking two new medication (benedryl & hydrcotosone cream) for the itching . I sat and thought what am I having a allergic reation to what am I doing diffrent and then it dawned on me that I am using a new detergent (purex 3 in 1 sheets) and so I stopped using the detergent and the hives have not came back so I will go back to my Tide Free .

My whole family, dad excluded, is allergic to Purex. We use Tide(the basic generic powder without any fancy additives) instead and have never had a reaction to it. We can't use Bounce dryer sheets either due to the same reaction. We use Snuggle instead.

I didnt have any allergies or hay fever until I hit my 30's they they all just descended on me on mass I cant go near soap, or lanolin, I'm so sensitive to it, if my partner washes his hands with soap and touches my skin I react within minutes I have tons of other allergies, fur would you believe, after what we were taking about grass, house dust, yeast, you name it and I'll react to it, but its only ever one eye that gets runny I'm a strange creature

For some people, like me, excessive allergies as I got older (coupled with what seemed to be easily explainable joint pain)were the vague symptoms for an auto-immune disorder. Diagnosis --> vasculitis. Thank you and take care.

(family member)
Chasing changing symptoms for +30 years, big picture shows auto-immune disorder.
Doctors were useless. For two of the more sever conditions (but lesser known) we had to introduce the doctors to the disorders.

Do not use purex crystals.. I was just sent to the Emergency Room yesterday morning and the ER doctor confirmed that my heavy chest\rash\hives\fever\very high blood pressure almost 200 over 49 -- thought I was having a heart attack -- all confirms from the first time use of purex!!! 2 days in the hospital and counting. EKG's, Benedryl injections multiple, steroid injections intravenously as well as heart stress tests and heart pictures taken all because of purex!!! I'm writing so that everyone who uses this will just take it back to the store or discard it or you will end up in the hospital. This was the most scariest thing I ever went through as we had to pin-point to what caused this, and sure enough it was the purex.. I thought my skin was coming off from laying in my sheets with it, and wearing my clothes washed in purex.. My eyes were almost shut closed from the swelling just smelling the scent. Bad, Bad, Bad news. This company does not even have a warning label on the back of their bottles... So mad about this... So user beware!!! I cannot even believe all of the posts from other users who have had an allergic reaction to this nasty stuff. It should be discontinued. Shame on this company for not doing clinical trials on it first before making a huge profit on it. It's the cheapest than all the rest too which concerns me even more. Makes sense now to me.

Was your doctor able to pinpoint specifically what it was in Purex you were allergic too? Or perhaps it was a tainted batch or something. Either way that's pretty scary stuff.

I'll use the liquid detergent but I haven't used powdered detergents for a long time. I'll be sure to steer clear of those ones, though. Thanks for the heads-up.

Just because something is 'Natural' doesn't mean it can't be an allergen. There are all sorts of allergens found in nature (pollen being the most obvious). Stop assuming that just because something is 'natural' that it won't 'kill you'.

I got poison ivy once & that's natural, it was far from good!! I use Tide Pods & have never had a problem. I do not use any dryer sheets but my "significant other" does have not seen any issues with her skin! I am very surprised with all the legal action that goes on here (some of which is damm stupid) that no-one has filed a case action law suit against the manufactures??

Recently had a scary event where I woke up covered in red bumps and lips puffed up. Quickly used anti itch medicine and allergy medicine. They reduce and came back three days in a row. Narrowed down to the purex crystals. Only thing that has changed in my life at this time. Stopped using, washed everything again as so far so good. I will never use that product again. Lucky I did not wind up in the hospital.
