Apparently so judging by the war of words going on between film critic Roger Ebert and Salon reviewer Andrew O'Hehir. Naturally I must side with Ebert on this one even if O'Hehir hadn't been so absurdly over-the-top. A couple excerpts:

O'Hehir--"It's legitimate to wonder exactly what Christian-friendly and 'middle-American' inspirational values are being conveyed here, or whether they're just providing cover for some fairly ordinary right-wing ideology and xenophobia."

--" 'Secretariat' actually goes much further, presenting a honey-dipped fantasy vision of the American past as the Tea Party would like to imagine it, loaded with uplift and glory and scrubbed clean of multiculturalism and social discord. "

Ebert--"We learn the horse is a carrier not merely of Ron Turcotte's 130 pounds, but of Nazism, racism, Tea Party ideology and the dark side of Christianity."

Gon' check it out tomorrow.

I guess what the Left considers "dark" compared to what the Right considers "dark" will always leave us in the dark.

....and the light of Truth will continue to fall on closed eyes. After all, if we can't know the whole Truth, we must not be capable of knowing any of it.

I dunno, I think Secretariat was the best--setting records at the KD and Belmont that still stand.

And the movie did have a social (political) message, (which most movies worth a s*** do). But it was about a very simple thing: a woman standing up to the good-old-boy racehorse establishment. The movie is mostly about that, with a finish that reminds us that we can indeed be inspired by some exceptional animals.

(Goddamit, dump the point system. I've gotten zero for the last two posts. It's the principle of the thing.)
