there are two ways to earn respect, fighting and earning it. respect comes from the outside, its nothing you can command. Why do people expect respect when they have done nothing to earn it. Two people talking, respect to each other is definitely important, but you should do something to expect it. Even just a simple comment such as "thank you" "sir" or something to show gratitude is enough to earn respect, at least for that initial conversation. Your mannerisms also can show the type of person you are. If someone does something to you or acts a certain way towards you that makes you think disrespect why do you think that starting a fight with that person will change that. Fighting for respect is only a sense of feeling of respect. Its not real respect, its just a thought. the word "don't disrespect me" is one of the most hates quotes I hear. "if you think someone is disrespecting you" what have you done to earn it, on top of that if someone is disrespecting you...who cares. Do you think everyone will respect you?

Great topics.

Are you doing it for points or are you really interested in the comments?

so if 'fighting for respect' is not 'real' respect. then there is only ONE way to get respect, and that is earn it.

IMO, from what the OP states, it sounds more like "I'll get them first before they get me"

When I meet someone for the first time, I give them respect. Until they prove to me(actions or words) that they do not deserve it. To me it's just a basic respect I have for those I meet. Once it's lost though, it takes A LOT to gain it back from me.

If someone starts out 'right from the gate' and gives me no respect, they won't have mine.

I've never uttered the words 'Don't disrespect me', but there again I don't see myself as someone who automatically commands respect.

is it better to be feared or respected? is it too much to ask for just a nice hug?

You're absolutely right, Delta. I dislike all this potentially agressive stuff.

I agree. Respect must be earned, one cannot just presume that they deserve to be respected if they do not engage in respectful activity themselves. I can't stand it when those of a certain age believe that the youth should respect them simply because they've managed to live a bit longer. In the end if you are a good person then you will be respected by someone.

Humm, yeah, you would think..and normally so; but some people really get off on disrespecting others... - no matter if you stand on your head until you are blue in the face trying to earn it.

i would think then you don't allow yourself to be around or avail for that person to disrespect you then. why fight it if they 'get off on it'?

Fighting is childish.
You don't earn respect that way.
You earn FEAR that way.
