I just downloaded and installed the latest Windows XP service pack. Immediately afterwards, my system is under attack from all sides by adware, spyware, viruses, hijacks, you frikking name it.

My Norton, Spybot, HiJack This and my firewall are being made to work for their money today!

OK, I don't like macs. I need mainstream software. I acknowledge that PCs and Windows are often less than ideal, but I need the mainstream software that is generally not as available on the mac. I like choice. Sue me. Oh, I also want my money to be going towards the gubbins inside the machine, not a designer curvy white case.

As for linux. No. I do not want to spend all my time administering my bloody system. I had a dual boot with linux once. I spent all my time in Windows, unless I just fancied fiddling with linux. Forgive me if I believe an operating system should be there to run my programs within, as opposed to being the actual object of all my time on the pc.

And Norton isn't really cack. Everyone says it is, because everyone hates the big boy.

But zone alarm is easy. I can see right through it via ports 8888, 9032, and 4767.

norton: recource hog... and people think vista is a resource hog... HAH!

pah, who needs more security than a hardware firewall?
unless of course they're a complete idiot who can't tell a virus from a normal program or other file... an example being on the gnutella network, why the heck would photoshop CS2 be 872KB?!

i don't blame microsoft. i used to. i use both windows and linux as well as solaris. an os is just like a damn browser. as long as my homework and assignments get done as required, the choice of os does not matter.

now, i see that many face trouble with xp.

first - don't install sp2 (sp2 security features can be compensated by using 3rd party freeware)

second - install a firewall e.g sygate personal firewall
third - prevent generic host process and svchost.exe from accessing the internet - use your firewall settings
fourth - install some free antispyware - www.spybot.com
fifth - install a free antivirus - www.avast.com
sixth - install a 3rd party browser and mail client - e.g Opera(free no ads - with e-mail client incl. www.opera.com) or www.mozilla.org firefox and thunderbird

if you need help, pm me.

Sound advice, if I had been using my home machine.

It's a work machine, so there are strict guidelines on what has to be installed.

Indeed (about the work system esp. in companies). but unless you're the network or systems administrator in an enterprise, you won't be fired or be blaimed in case the cause of your lack of efficiency or in case there was some error, is caused by some virus or the result of someone who has hacked and cracked the system.
i guess it's mostly home end users who complain the most about microsoft.
maybe they should follow specific guidelines too - like following the home users charter. lol.
- to those having trouble, just post it here and we shall all work together to help you get over it.
