With all the problems yesterday with people not being able to vote do you think the system should be updated for the 21st century? How hard would it be to set up a digital voting system where people could vote via the internet?

Not only would it stop things like this happening again but it might increase turnout as I'm sure more people would vote if they could do it from the comfort of their sofa rather than standing in line in the rain for an hour.

Digital voting is bulls***.

Paper ballots are the way to go, end of story.

I don't think it should be done using the internet (well depends on the deffinition of "internet" )

But I do think it should be computerized, and if last night shows anything, longer opening times, or close at 10, but they are allowed to stay open if there are large queing or something.

Because it's true. Security, accountability, traceability, and verification on digital voting machines or the internet is virtually impossible.

Paper is simple, easy, verifiable, and trackable, and easily recountable. Not subject to hacking or bugs. In fact, the best digital voting mechanisms are the ones that actually produce paper printouts.

There is nothing wrong with paper ballots. Paper > digital.

Ok but couldn't you incorporate digital voting with a paper system? Where each eligible voter got a unique ID code sent though the post which they would have to enter when they voted online?

They send PIN's through the post and if you didn't recieve one you could phone a number and get a new one? Almost everyone who uses telephone banking has to confirm their identity over the phone. It would have to be a bit more thorough but it's still possible, no?

OK, so how does the massive, massive expense of digital voting somehow make voting better when you still have paper anyway?

Wouldn't it make more sense to simply avoid administrative cockups than spend hundreds of millions of dollars on digital systems to be run by largely untrained staff?

So train the staff a bit lol. If it makes it fairer and quicker and can be secure then why not? Paper voting isnt foolproof either. All I got was a form thing through the door, and no-one asked for proof of ID when I went to vote. If we'd moved house anyone could have used my vote.
