Now that I have your attention, I would like to discuss a serious topic.
I stopped at a store last time I was in America and noticed there was a bumper sticker on the window that said;

If you can't feed em
Don't breed em

From reading that my impression was that it was meant for people who produce children and know they can't afford them so then they rely on state funds. Fist, is that the impression that you get from reading it?

Second, to what extent do you this this applies? Do you think if someones birth control does not work and they are not prepared financially that comment applies to them?

Is it more for those on the system who just produce child after child?

Do you think this is a problem, people having children they can't support and then it becomes the tax payers issue to support the child?

What should be done about it if anything?

For me, it just simply means if you can't feed em, don't breed em.

Probably because I always think deeper and further only when needed. Going into deeper thoughts is just one of the fallacies of people.. how hatred, misunderstandings, judging started, which most can't avoid.

My first impression was about animals and how puppys are dumped when the owners of the parents don't want them.

ON the other hand with humans and having children. If you have a child no matter how it happened and what you were on. Man up and take responsibility. There is nothing that pisses me off more than parents who do a s*** job of raising their children because they can't be bothered or didn't want them.

I know personally when I have children if it came to be paying child support, when I could I would pay more than just the child support.

Seems to me it's aimed at people who choose to have kids (ie no birth control) that they can't afford.

Could also be referring to puppies too I guess.

Of course that is my thought as well, Tino. I guess I am trying to figure out if this what many people think and if they want something to be done about mothers who keep having children and the state paying for it.

My first thought on seeing something like that would be of the s*** I see on Animal Planet... those sick people that have puppy farms and stuff like that... But I can also see how it could be about people who abuse the system.
I started accepting help from the State when I was pregnant... Yeah... I'm on welfare. I get 453 bucks a month, and have to provide receipts to where it all goes. I know not every program requires the recipients to do so, but this one does... I also volunteer in a youth at risk group and at a senior citizen center... I feel I give back. I also hear almost weekly about people 'taking' the system... laughing on how this month they're getting a plasma TV and s*** like that... THAT pisses me off. It gives people like me a bad name. People like me that use it as a supplement and not a way of life. People like me that actually DO give back to the community.
I guess what I'm trying to say, is that not all people that rely on the system are taking it for a run.

I take it as that and I completely agree with it. If you're stuck in a minimum wage job and you struggle month after month, why on earth would you choose to bring a kid into that situation?!

I watched a programme about people on benefits and this family had about 6 kids and were expecting another. The dad hadn't worked for nearly 10 years and it really pissed me off. Of course, they were getting rewarded for their laziness because every time they had another kid, their benefits increased. They were on ?35k a year on benefits, I think they said. Which is nearly 15k more than the average wage in Britain. I think benefits should be capped for people like them, cos I don't see them working again!

Rant over

And I thought puppies (and kittens) too..

I don't really ever think of having children as "breeding".
In my community that term has a completely different conotation.. and it would never involve children.

But what do I know?

I think the public assistance from government is there for those who need it. I am not getting into disability as that is not the topic here.

I think if someone has a first child and is not prepared and has to go on the system until they get work or go back to school then I am more than happy to have my tax dollars help that cause. We all mess up and I am not saying a child is a mistake but often times the timing of one if a mistake and not the actual child.

My problem comes when people abuse the system with having many children and have children they know they cannot afford. Children do not deserve to be brought into an environment if they cannot be in clothes, pampers or eat when they are hungry.

I can only speak as to where I live and my province. We have a HUGE problem here with two things, one is able bodies men and women not working because in the long run they get more being on assistance.

The second was 16 year old girls having babies on purpose, drop out of school and get assistance.

The gov't recognized the problem and increased the drop out age here.

We have a huge problem here with most people on assistance abusing it. I am not saying it is like that every where but it is here.

I once reported someone who had her trucker b/f lviing with her and had his address of his mom. She said she could not work due to health problems but babysat a few kids in her home, each day from Mon-Fri. THEN she had two kids but one lived with her parents but she said he lived with her so she got the assistance for him and also child credits etc. I felt it my duty to report that.

There are people who need the system because they are single mothers but to me that is for a temporary thing but here it is a way of life for many single mothers and their kids repeat the cycle.

I am curious Maxi as to what benefits are given to moms on assistance where you are?

Here single moms get low income housing and the places are actually quite nice and have playgrounds etc. I am happy for the ones who need it that it is not beat down and bad living conditions.

They also get so much a month in assistance that increases per child, tax rebates, free insurance. We have free medicare here but that does not cover dental, eyes, or prescriptions. That is the main cause of the abuse here. Most jobs here are minimum wage and the employers give a few hours less than full time so they do not have to provide benefits. But working minimum wage one can't really afford private health care. So a lot of single moms don't work so they can have coverage for dental, eyes and prescriptions.

I am torn at this because if you can work, you ought to but at the same time when employers do this, it hurts those working as they don't have benefits then make too much for the assistance insurance so it's like being stuck between a rock and a hard place.

One of the lawyers I work for, his father owns a lot of property and set up a building for single mom and the rule is that you do not get it if you have a boyfriend living with you. When he would find out that a mom had a boyfriend there and he was working, he would start eviction on them because he wanted to truly help those who really needed it.

Most car stickers are cack and painfully unfunny. This one is no exception. If I saw this one on a car I'd slash the tires.

It was on the window of a shop. I am not sure if they had rocks in the parking lot.

I do find this one made me think.

And the first picture that came to my mind was the SPCA spay and neuter plan.
Why can't we have that for humans?
I mean come on, there is free condoms available everywhere. Where can I buy one of those bumper stickers?
