I really don't, to me, it's reverse discrimination.

Here's a scenario:
Say a hospital needs at least 20% (because specific quotas are unconstitutional) minority nurses. A male nurse with a 3.95 GPA, fresh out of college applies for a nursing position only to be turned down because a minority, with a 2.30 GPA, applies for the same position because the hospital needs to up it's minority percentage.

In cases like this, it's too dangerous to apply the affirmative action policy, plus, it's obvious the male nurse has worked harder to obtain higher grades in college and deserves the position.

Affirmative action is supposedly to "make up" for past discrimination (which I don't agree with) but it also supports diversity in the work/school place.

What do you think?

I don't agree with it. I think it started off as good, and now has turned to PC.
I think that race and age should not be included on job apps. And interviews given behind closed screens with voice changers so you are interviewing the person and not their age, sex or race.
Ok it's a dreamworld and not practical, but that would make it the most fair!

This is true.

Like how on a LOT of job application it asks if you're Hispanic/Latino but not if you're any other race?

And there are ones (wasn't the census one?) that asks BOTH. Are you Hispanic/Latino....and then later 'what ethnicity are you?'

Also, if the less experienced person is given a job based on their minority status, that leaves a very qualified person looking for a job. If they can't find a job in the field that they're trained for, they're going to look in a different field and often be denied because they're 'overqualified'.
Way to punish people for being experienced!

The minority have to unfortunately pay for things from the past....I say...everyone is equal....what happened in the past is other peoples faults....don't make innocent people pay for what happened in the past

What we're talking about here is the exact opposite though, it's the majority paying for it.

Yes, I agree with that part.

What Kristy's talking about is Affirmative Action, where an employer is required to hire a certain number (or percentage) of "minority" employees. Minorities include women and people of 'color' - which would be anything but white. Guess who that discriminates against the most.... white males.

What you're advocating is Equal Opportunity Employment.

The last job I had our Manager left and when it came down to 2 candidates to replace him (both internal candidates) one was a white guy who would have been perfect and the other a black guy who was thisclose to being fired...of course the black guy got it and he was a horrible manager...after I was gone he told my replacement that the reason I left was that I would not work for a black man...I was super pissed...

The company had been hiring minorities for all management positions (supervisor and above) and even in one case demoted a white woman who had been there for over 10 years and had her train the woman they hired to replace her...only because they had lost a lawsuit regarding how many minorities they had in management...

People should be hired based on their abilities not skin color or anything else...

I think my opinion on the subject has already been summed up by a cartoon in another thread (cheers Katie)

No one alive today had anything to do with slavery; either owning them or being one.
As for past discrimination like in the early/mid 20th century, hardly anyone alive today had to go through that.

Minorities being "repaid" is bull, IMO.
I don't want to have a job I'm well qualified for being taken from me from someone who may or may not have less experience just on the basis of race/gender. I wasn't around to participate in discriminatory acts, so I shouldn't be punished.

It may sound blunt, but it is what it is.
