I was wondering what everyone's thoughts on this were.

For those that don't know, because there's been a few deaths that may be linked to cases of taking Mephedrone (a currently legal drug in the United Kingdom), the UK Government are rushing through a ban on the drug. In the past they've done the same to other formerly herbal highs like Spice.

Here's an article about it: Guardian.co.uk

I'm still undecided on whether I agree with the ban or not, but I'll give my opinion a little later on.

EDIT: Spelled it wrong. Doh.

I'm against it. Prohibition doesn't work, just drives the market underground, sends crime into orbit, is anti-liberty and corrupts government officials.

The only prohibition I favor is for underage children.

Isn't methadone just a legal (prescription) form of heroin?

Yeah sorry I spelled it wrong, I meant Mephedrone which is different to Methadone. In my defense they all look the same

How are you going to ban underage children? They're born that way. (Just teasing).

But yes, what you said is pretty much true. Just makes something more for limited law enforcement to look for.

Yeah, I noticed that when I clicked on the article. I may have misread it, but are they trying to determine whether or not it is actually an amphetamine?

We had something like that happen with pseudoephedrine but all it did was make them take it off the shelf and you have to get it straight from the pharmacist. I think there's also a limit on how many you can get in a day (or maybe week) - you used to have to give them your ID or something too.

Yeah an age restriction has been suggested. It's extremely easy to get hold of from the internet which obviously can be very dangerous for younger people who may not be educated in moderation, the consequences of taking it or the potential results of an overdose.

It prevents heroine addicts from having withdrawals, but doesn't get you high.

That's not what I heard. Do you speak from experience? I'm not trying to be rude to you here, I'm genuinely interested as my mom-in-law is on increasing doses of it.

They should have a seperate classification for stuff like this to guage how harmful (or not) it is, banning it outright just pushes it underground.

As for the deaths, yeah they were 'linked' to Mephedrone but the two lads that died had been drinking lots of vodka and had taken Methadone (the Heroin substitute) too. I'm no doctor but I'd bet the vodka and Methadone had more to do with their deaths than the Mephadrone.

Also banning it will only serve to bring more 'legal highs' into the forefront.

It's a never ending battle where banning something doesn't work. IMO.

"Higher doses of methadone can block the euphoric effects of heroin, morphine, and similar drugs. As a result, properly dosed methadone patients can reduce or stop altogether their use of these substances."

I don't think so, I know someone who's brother was a Heroin addict, he's on Methadone now and says it's a worse substance than the Heroin itself. People get addicted to Methadone as easily as they do Heroin.

People get addicted to it, that doesn't mean it gets them high.

What do you mean easy to get it over the Internet? Set up a meet or something? Of course they can combat that the same way they enforce other law violations on the Internet--decoys etc. There are legal, non-intrusive ways.
