I fail to see how mentioning somebody elses theory on the origins of humans is indoctrination.

Because science gives information and offers evidence.

ID and religion requires belief.

Teach me about your religion, but do not require me to believe it. Do not teach it as "truth". That is the difference that I am striving to explain.

By the same token I also believe that it should be made completely clear in schools that science is not the absolute truth. It is our best understanding to date based on our observation of the world around us.

I am NOT saying that ID and religion should not be taught in schools. I feel that people are arguing against a viewpoint that is not mine. I am saying that it is not science, and that it should be taught in a different class.

ok, I guess I shouldn't be arguing in favor of a theory that I don't agree
with.

However, even if it is a botched theory, they can teach that in schools. If
students are going to be exposed to it a challenged with it, I think they
should have the facts. Why not give them the facts and let them
decide. If the theory doesn't make any sense, hopefully they can learn
and understand that.

I really don't know what the ruling was. Was it that they can't even talk about
it in the classroom or that they just can't teach it as an alternative to
evolution?

Personally, I think there needs to be more of a discussion between
creationism and evolution in the classroom, but that's a whole different
debate.

hip-hip hooray!!!!
That is the best news I have heard in a while. Let's leave science in the classroom and theology in church. That should work for everyone.
Thank you Pennsylvania, there is one less thing for me to be embarassed to be an American for.

That is soooooooooooooooooo funny!!!!!

You actually said it yourself in this post, but evolution requires belief too. I don't think the
need for belief is a distinction that can be made between evolution, ID and creationism.

do they teach theology in public schools? I don't mean like indoctrinating
students into certain religions, but do they teach kids about different religions
and beliefs?

I love how the courts in this country seem to run everything. What is the point in having school boards when courts can decide what should or should not be taught?

Its all about checks and balances. The courts are just part of the process

Just because you don't agree with the decision of a school board does not mean their views are impartial. It is not the power of the court to make law in this country but they do it anyways. This is just one example.

The court is interpriting the law. The will be a clear separation of church and state. It is in the Constitution. This court is making a judgement to that law, not making one up.

I think that ID and creationism should be taught in religion classes, not in science classes. And if you let one theory in, you should let them all in, including the flying spagheti monster www.venganza.org. I think that public schools should teach about all major religions with no particular emphasis on any of them. This way the children can make up their own mind as to which religion they consider to be true, if any.

I'm not sure about other schools but at my primary school they did, in year 7 we went to churches of several different religions, christianity, budhism, hinduism and a few others. After we went there our teachers gave us some sheets and talked about the different beliefs of these religions and then we had to do an asingment on a religion of our choice, it could even be an obscure one. I chose Nordic religion. Personaly I think it is offensive to call one religion mythology and another religion. Why do we call Ancient Greek mythology mythology and not religion? I find their beliefs around as plausible as any other religion curently around.

OK look I need an answer to this. If I was God and I could create heaven and
earth and all of that, don't your think I could work in a few abiguities, like fossils
and the possibility of evolution, and lots of other things, so there is doubt....
Isn't that what faith is about..... Same with intelligent design.....

I think all the theories should be taught and none pushed. Kids are the result of
an intelligent design, either foisted on them or learned for themselves.... Given
time, information, and no pressure they can assimilate the "facts" and make up
their own minds.... Education, facts, not selective suppression of either......

But why would God want people to doubt him? Wouldn't this simply mean more people going to hell? If al; theories were taught however then there would be no time for anything else. All the previous religions in the world would have to be taught, Nordic, Greek, Roman, etc. Also all the still practised religions like Christianity, Wiccanism, Satanism, etc. And of course any theory that any person invents, like FSM . I think it is unrealistic to teach all the different creationism theories. I know that in a previous post I said that I thought that they should teach all religions, but now that I think about it more I realise that that is totally unrealistic.

At my school, they did not. They barely covered s*** and never really delved into religion at all. Then again, I did grow up in the Bible Belt, which is notorious for having "open-minded" Christians, despite the fact that many of the schools incorporate Christianity and no other religion into the way things are done. But I'm all over the place . . . what I am saying is that if a different religion was taught, it was not taught to any great length or to any great detail.

Well, I'm not sure about "intelligent" life, but there have been other cases of evolution, which I believe is how Darwin originally came up with the theory. If I remember correctly, he was studying the animals around the Galapagos Islands and noticed how the animals there were suited to the environment. The animals fit into that habitat and not another one, such as how a bird from Florida in the US fits in there but would have difficulty living in England or some such place. So, evolution stretches to many other creatures besides simply humans.
