I think they are beneficial. Firstly usually attackers stalk their prey for at least a few minutes, hours, days etc. A woman who has taken the time to learn some techniques may well exude more confidence when out walking alone, generally attackers will go for meeker looking victims, those they think will not fight back.

Secondly most attackers want their attack to be quick and as quiet as possible. Even if the woman does still get hurt she is more likely to get away if she puts up a fight and makes noise.

A lot of self defense classes are not about being able to put a guy down, it's about giving vital time to make a run for it or to hail help from somewhere else and giving a woman the confidence to do that.

I was a publican for a long time and I was taught some basics from someone who frankly you really wouldn't want to meet down a dark alley if he had a grudge against you. He taught me ways to just simply get away from an attacker and more importantly how to avoid finding myself in that situation in the first place.

Yah your right on in this post.

Criminals know how to read a person so they can pick on the easiest target.

a lot people don't realize it but things like the way you walk and your posture, the look on your face, are all thing a lot of criminals consider when picking out a "target".

I think in instances of multiple attackers nothing short of being a self defense expert is gonna protect you.

I totally agree that the girl is more likely to get away from an attacker if she puts up a fight and makes a lot of noise.

But I'd still say that the little you will learn from these classes is not enough to make a real difference in a real situation... So any sense of confidence some girls may get from those classes would be mostly false...

Jeet kune do is the best.

And is made for practical real life self defence.

One of the things they teach in jeet kune do is wing chun which was a self defence style created by a woman.

Hmmm I don't know what Jeet kune do is...
all I can say for sure is that my girlfriend is living proof that hapkido works really well for a girl/woman too (with a lot of training).

Jeet kune do is the martial art Bruce Lee created.

It's made from wing chun, foot work from fencing, and western boxing with the addition of the muay thai elbows and knees.

If women want to learn self-defense, find a place that offers actual instruction with a real person, they help you a lot better than a at-home video.
Aikido would be a good choice for women, this particular martial art focuses on dealing with opponents who are bigger and stronger.
Steven Seagal is a Master of this Form.

hehe an at-home video that would probably be the definition of worthless in this case... actual instruction with a real person would be an absolut minimum for any efficiency...

We had a guy come into school to try and teach us how to defend ourselves/put attackers of us.

It was things like, keep your hair in a bun so he can't grab you by it, and carry an unbrella at all times as a weapon.

We were also told if you think you are being followed, go up to the person and ask the time, make eye contact.

But the best weapon you have is your voice - make NOISE!

I dunno how true any of this is, but when i was at the shops one time there was a man following me around. I was so scared, in the end i went up to the security guard and told him. The store manager let me use her office phone to ring my mum to get me (i was only 14 at the time).
