Say I buy a wireless router from Walmart and install it. How would I go about keeping other people from accessing it? I know there's someone in my neighborhood who's got a network, but it's locked. The only reason I know that is because I turned my phone's Wifi access on and it popped up. I do NOT want anyone leeching off what I'm paying for.

As you install the router, you follow a set up process that includes a 'protect your network'.

Always keep it passworded and follow instructions carefully.

The set -up process will ask you if you want to enable a security password. Select yes, and choose a password. Then no one will be able to access your network without knowing your password.

I thought that would be all there is to it but the AT&T guy said it would be safer to have THEM come out and install if for me. I can buy a router for about $40 and do it myself which is what he suggested to start with. Then he tried to talk me into paying AT&T a one time fee of $149 and be sure that my network would be set up right AND private. I'd rather pay $40.

Lol, you don't have to do that. I just called the phone number for tech support in the instructions that came with my router, and had a tech walk me through it, it was totally free, and if I had any problems following the instructions, the guy was right there on the phone to work through it.

That sounds good. I got DSL two years ago because I installed a wireless router from Alltel (now Verizon) and it was soooo slow. I'm a bit confused about that. Everyone says Wifi is faster.

Also, my phone is 3G capable but I'm on the Edge network at home. It's pretty slow compared to 3G. Verizon has good 3G coverage, but I'm just sick of their sorry customer service and the fact that they nickle and dime everyone. Everything was fine until I had to upgrade from my Alltel phone. I'd been a customer since March 2002.

So I want the router for my phone, not my PC. Will it work?

You just password protect it and make sure that you do. If someone gains access they can download kiddie porn or do other illegal things and the police will arrest you. It's scary. One of C's friends owns a house and rents the basement. He did not think to passwprd protect his. The polcie showed up one day and had a warrent. After being taken downtown and computers seized, his tenant downloaded kiddie porn.

The speed of your internet will depend on the speed of internet service you are paying for. Your wireless router can slow your internet down if it's an older technology router (a or b is slow, g is current, and n is developing) but it can't make it faster. The fastest speed would be to be plugged directly into the connection with a cable, skipping the router entirely, but it's a phone so that's not an option. I'm not sure how DSL compares to Edge cell phone internet since I've never had DSL, but I think it's faster. Assuming your phone is wifi-capable, it should pick up your router signal with no problem. Right now, I'm online on my G1 with my wifi connection, no problem.

My DSL is fast and I have the iPhone 3G S (WiFi capable, of course). I don't want the router if it's gonna cause my desktop Internet to slow down. The guy told me the router would speed up my phone's connection as long as I'm not more than 300 feet from my PC.

I'm not good at computers but my pc is not brand new or anything and I have a router. The router is in the office with the pc and I use my phone and now laptop for internet all around the house and it is very fast. It is faster than my pc itself.

I'll ask about combining the Wifi with the DSL and see what I can find out.

A wireless router just takes whatever internet connection you plug into it, and converts it to a wireless signal that can be picked up by wifi-enabled devices like laptops and smartphones.

Okay, thanks for explaining that. I'll probably get the router tomorrow.

Port your DSL modem to your router, and then your router to your PC. And no, it does not slow down the connection in any way. So bascially, your router would be taking the internet from your DSL modem, broadcasting it, but giving your computer wired access, which is generally faster than wireless access.

That sounds great, but as I've already tried a wireless router for my Internet, I'm skeptical about it being faster than my DSL. ^^^ Wired access > wireless access as in the speed of satellite Internet access?
