where i stay it is deemed rascist to call them black..but we are in a very small area so perhaps that has something to do with it as we dont have alot of other nationalities here x

That's the feeling I get here, it's getting so politically correct, there was a discussion not so long ago about whether coppers are allowed to describe a person's ethnicity that they may be looking for..in relation to a crime

It's fine to call somebody black or white, but it's when you generalise a nationality or ethnicity like that where some people could become offended, especially if they was talking about that specific race in a negative way. But yeah, just to describe a person as being black or being white with no intentions of a negative effect is not racist (in my opinion).

I don't know where you've gotten that from. I'm black, and I like being called black. I don't like being called "coloured" though. That really gets on my nerves!!!

Black people always felt they were being insulted because of their past. Now they are insulting themselves.

"Black" is certainly not racist, and most black people I've met prefer to be called "black" if anything.
Friend of mine says this is also the case in the midlands where he lived.

Really makes me squirm when well meaning but out of touch, new labour types come out with "coloured". Now that is pretty insulting. When I told someone to stop saying that, she was all "oh that's what they prefer. Black colleague said yes it's not the right thing to say....but she still kept using it. Silly cow.

I remember several years ago it was always racist or politcally incorrect to call them that instead of African American. I don't think it's such a big deal anymore now though.
